Waitlist Strategies

What is the best way to maximize your chances of geting off the waitlist and into the class of 2014?

First of all, what is the best way to express interest for futher consideration? Secondly, are there any additional things to submit to increase your chances?

Send an update of your recent activities (if there’s anything significant) and write a very nice letter about how much you love Chicago and want to go there. “It’s an honor to even be on the waitlist of such a fine institution” sort of thing. Be specific about what you love about Chicago and essentially say that it’s your number one choice. That’s what I did during EA (with a downward trend in grades) and I got in. letters like that show that you really care, and that means a lot when Chicago is looking at increasing yield.

Demonstrate interest!!!

Another thought is to wait awhile on the letter - maybe send an email to your regional rep now, followed by a letter - keep in mind they won’t start gong to the wait list for over a month when the acceptances/declines are required.

If you haven’t seen my recent post on the waitlist already, I’d definitely encourage you to check out this blog post addressing just these questions: https://blogs.uchicago.edu/collegeadmissions/2009/04/advice_for_waitlisted_students.html

Posted last year, but still relevant.

If a student is offered admission from the waitlist, how long is the student given to make his/her decision?

I understand that the admission folks do not recommend that waitlisted students visit U of Chicago, that students should focus their attention to where they have been accepted. But should the unexpected occur and an offer is made, is there enough time for the student to visit before making a decision? We live in California and my D has never been to Chicago. While she would be ecstatic with an offer, she would probably still want to visit before saying yes.

Id say yes and deposit without hesitation lol
