Waitlist Success Stories

ANYONE KNOW OF PAST SUCCESS STORIES WITH THE WAITLIST. IT MIGHT BE BENEFICIAL TO ALL.
TWO OF MY Ds GOT IN OFF WAITLIST.( one in April one in May)
S HAS BEEN WAILISTED.

I'd like to know this too. Bearcats, didn't you have someone in your class who was accepted off the waitlist?

Where did they get in off of 4xprep?

We know a boy who was accepted off the waitlist at the end of July last year. He needed FA and it took that long for the school to come up with the necessary funds.

Wow, thats a really long time!

well what waitlists? Andover, Exeter, St.Pauls, Deerfiels, Hochkiss, and chote... note chance

The admissions officer told him that they would only take him off if they could give him the FA need to meet his EFC for both years (11th grade repeat) so they had to wait until other students who were offered FA declined because they got off waitlists at other schools. I think it's known as the "prep school domino effect".

The both got in off waitlist at BB&N. It is a private day school in Cambridge across from Harvard. One got in early April as refusals of students going elsewhere started to role in. the other in late May. Both needed FA. which may take time to become available.

I've been to BB&N, it's a wonderful school. If it was boarding I would have applied.

Yah thats because BBN couldn't get nayone ot go last year becasue they were abou to start in a renovation whihc would force students to take classes in the gym... No wonder... Also Milton was easier on admissions last year because of their scandle witht eh hockey players. Thus Nobels was the ahrdest coed day school to get into in the boston area.

renovations will be complete in sept. the classes weren't actually in the gym.
there are cassrooms in the sports complex which weren't being used. so instant classrms

Isn't Nobles a day and monday to friday boarding school? I'm pretty sure it is. That's where Ayla Brown went, and is going. You know, the one from American idol season 5, remmember.

Yes, Nobles is a 5 day boarding school, kids go home on weekends.

Daughter was just accepted for class of 11! (not boarding, though!).

Congrats to your Daughter MA mon!!!!!! :D

MA MOM
is she an athlete?
they usually don't accept many for grade 11

...at one of the top schools (AESDHCL) and s/he shared this about SOME of the waitlist candidates (although our conversation was not about waitlists) and that's that the waitlist is SOMETIMES used to get the benefit of seeing the student's performance for another semester (or two).

S/he said that in those cases the student is basically "in" -- provided that when they go back to the student's school for an update on grades, they see continued success.

So, PLEASE, if you are waitlisted, understand that you may be on an extended audition! Do not hang your head and check out mentally. Do not wallow in self-pity. You may be holding onto of the remaining golden tickets...if you keep your nose up and eye on the grindstone and chin on the prize...or...well, whatever....

It may be THAT simple for SOME of you to get off the waitlist. I'm not saying that you should forget about sending in extra recs, etc. Bear in mind that this only applies to some of the people on the waitlist at only one of the top schools (though I believe s/he implied the practice is also true at other schools we discussed). Still, this use of the waitlist was new to me. It makes sense. But I think it would be nice to know you have a "conditional acceptance" -- which is how I'd describe what s/he was talking about -- as opposed to a "contingent acceptance" -- which is how I'd describe the typical waitlist where your acceptance is contingent on outside factors, the biggest of which is an unexpectedly low yield, primarily among students who are much like you.

Just something else to chew on, gentles!

I know of two kids who got into Middlesex a couple of years ago, one in early April, the other in early September, after already starting at public high school!

MA mon ; big congratulations to you and your daughter on Nobles ! That's really great!

4xprep: I'm sorry, she's CLASS of 2011 (not 11th grade). Yes, that's confusing.

She is indeed an an athlete, but just an 8th grader now.

One huge drawback to getting in off a waitlist is that you don't get to participate in the planned revisit days. You have to make a decision with less information.

Ma mom
got you LOL

lefthandofdog
that is a drawback. My d didn;t get to revisist but was thrilled to go to the school
