Waitlist success stories

My college counselor told me to send in a letter saying I still wanted to go there and that the school was my first choice etc. but not to bother with anything else since it was highly unlikely that I would be getting off the waitlist. :(
Still haven't heard, but obviously, I am not holding my breath. Good luck to everyone, and congrats to those who do get off the waitlist!!

D's friend got into Duke off the waitlist 2 days ago.

As far as how to get off waitlists goes... I sent letters to the four schools I was waitlisted at reiterating my interest in the school, giving specific reasons why I'm a good match, and naming a few achievements/activities since January 1. It worked for Williams--haven't heard from the others yet.

I didn't think I had much of a chance at Duke's waitlist so I didn't send anything extra in, but I was accepted yesterday.

Sounds like Duke is taking a few off of their waitlist. Congrats!

Anyone know if Oberlin will use their waitlist this year?

i know bryn mawr is going to their waitlist this year but has anyone gotten off of it?

My friend from school also got off the waitlist at Duke last week; they must have had a low yield.

Good for those on the Duke wait list. 3 on just this thread...seems like a lot. Holding out for UVA here but I won't hold my breath. I heard they got a high yeild this year.

Depends on the school. For all of you, I recommend calling in and asking if they expect to go on the waitlist. At this juncture, all the schools will know since ALL sirs (even the ones sent in through mail) will have been recieved by now and colleges will know if they hit their yield. I'd also recommend asking how many they are going to take off and where you are ranked currently.

Some schools who get massive yields under accept intending to go on the WL to make sure they hit and dont surpass their yield. I know Michigan did that last year and possibly this year. Duke may have done that as well.

Could be the backlash from the lacrosse scandal as well I suspect. Sounds like Cornell is taking several people off, even if Stanford's had a good year.

Yeah. They got alot of bad publicity from that and i did hear their app total was lower than last year. Feel really bad for them. But at the same time, I can only imagine what Va Tech's yield will be this year after 2 shootings in one year.

I have a question... say a representative from a school calls you to ask whether you'll accept their offer off the waitlist... does that mean you've accepted a place or does that mean you're just letting them send you the acceptance package so that you can consider accepting?

I'm on two waitlists with a a school clearly as my first choice, so I'm just curious.

Kinda both - they want you to say yes b4 they send you the stuff. But usually they dont eve ntell you your finaid, so you can use that as an out. Waiting for the package will give you some time. Legally, you haven't done anything till you send back a card or form from that package. If #1 has not called by that time, then call them and tell them whats up, and ask if you are close or whatever.

and if #1 calls in June - hey, you've lost one deposit and survived, go for two!

Thanks for answering my question, jjaneway.

do you mind telling us which school?

artsavedmylife, my sister is friends with the Wellesley admissions dean and she said if you get a call asking about accepting from the waitlist, you automatcially say "I will go 100% guaranteed". Any uncertainty may result in you not getting an extended offer for admission.

thanks for that info flong i reaaaaaaaaaallly want to get off the wellesley waitlist

well, you cant be stagnant in your approach to getting of the W.L. Simply waiting for a decision is the worse way to get accepted. You should be emailing, calling, and sending letters to admissions, talking about how its ur top cohice and how you would matriculate 100% if offered extended admission offers.
