Waitlist thread - Washington & Lee class of 2020

Just decided to make this thread since I didn’t see one already. This thread is for waitlisted students to discuss in. Anyone else hoping to get accepted from the wait list?

W&L normally takes a good amount from the wait list. Last year was weird because they took an incredibly high number from the wait list, but that also has no bearing whatsoever on this year. Make sure to continue to show demonstrated interest if you serious on getting in. Good luck!

How can we continue to show demonstrated interest? Can we mail them a letter, or should we send an email? Is there anything else we can do to help our chances.

@gearstudio, it may be helpful to have your GC call or email W&L admissions. If you would definitely attend if admitted, let them know. If you have received any honors or awards since you applied, let them know. Don’t annoy the admissions office, though; one contact from you and one from your GC is sufficient. @coppijr is spot on.

coppijr and yauponredux are correct. Send them a letter (or the card) and tell them you will attend if admitted. Have your Guidance Counselor put in a good word for you. Don’t overdo the contact because it turns them off. As noted elsewhere in these W&L threads they have averaged over 90 taken from the Wait List for the past 8 or 9 years. Last year at 193 was odd. I would expect the number this year to be down closer to the recent average of in the 90 range, plus or minus. At about 20 percent of the class that gives those with strong applications who have been Waitlisted some reasonable hope. They also have to balance their budget so that impacts too. Good luck.

Accepted a spot on the wait list the moment I was offered it! I had originally applied EDII(even made the thread for it here in CC), was deferred and then Waitlisted. I sent a very heartfelt email to my admissions counsellor the other day and I was super happy to see that she acknowledged it.

Chances are always slim on waitlists, but I have a good feeling about this one. I also stated that I would unequivocally attend W&L should I be accepted- in the same way I would’ve had I been accepted via EDII. Personally, I feel that anyone deciding to accept a spot on the waitlist should have a serious interest in attending if given the chance. While there is no binding contract, it’s a huge gesture on their part to accept someone from it. It’d be such a shame to see a student accepted from a waitlist only to have them consider the college “just another option in the bag” and completely disregard it.

It’s been a long journey with WLU ever since I did the interview- so we shall see. Good luck guys!

@AGoodFloridian How can I find out who my admissions counsellor is?

Last year’s waitlist thread:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/washington-lee-university/1765895-2015-wait-list.html#latest

It seems they received their decision in two “waves”. An early one in mid April and another one at the beginning of May.
I can only pray that my financial need won’t be be my downfall :frowning: It’s been said getting off a waitlist with financial need is nigh impossible. Lovely.

Why is it said that requiring financial aid hurts significantly when on the waitlist? Have they actually put out such a statement?

@gearsstudio , absolutely not. It’s nothing with WL in particular. It’s a commonly accepted notion that when colleges look through their waitlist, they tend to gravitate more towards the students who can pay most, if not all of the costs.

This a huge generalization however- and while financial need may be a factor, I’m sure there is a lot more going into play when a decision is being made.

AGoodFloridian, Last year W&L accepted people well into the summer, so you never know. As for need for financial aid, that depends. As of May 1 they know how many financial aid dollars they will have to spend from next year’s budget for students who have already committed. If they have some remaining funds available they use them on the Wait List to attract students they want to fill the class. If the financial aid dollars budgeted for the next year are already spent you are correct that they pay attention to need levels when accepting students.

While it may be hard to say with certainty… Does next Friday (22nd) sound like a reasonable date to expect a notification?

Last year, some students were notified on the 20th(which was a Friday too.) I’m super excited to hear back!

Does anyone know how we hear back? Email? Letter in the mail? Do we get a rejection notification if we aren’t selected? I have no idea how any of this works.

AGoodFLoridian and gearstudio, they send you notification only if you have accepted a slot on the Wait List which you have done. The dates for notification vary. Yes, they send them out in waves but they are really ripples 3, 4, or 5 at a time over several days. They wait for reaction and then if they need more they send out more. It can go on well into June or even July like last year. If you stay on the Waitlist and are not accepted you will be notified that the Wait List is closed and that you won’t be offered admission. Notice should be done the same way you found out you were on Wait List which I assume was through your portal with a email to check your portal. There may be some calls to your guidance counselor to fill them in, determine real level of interest and so on.

So let me clear this up, if any of us receives a notification such as “There has been an update on your GHQ” this month or in the next, it’s safe to assume you’ve been admitted off the waitlist, correct? As far as I can tell, they don’t directly reject you on the waitlist, they just send a message saying they’ve closed it, sometime in late June or July.

WHEN!!!

@swimgirl1 Last year someone received their decision on the week of 16-20th in April, which corresponds to this coming week. And apparently that was “late” because last year’s accepted students day was on the 29th, this year it’s on the 25th.

While this is pure speculation, I wouldn’t be too surprised if we started hearing back this week.

ok… thanks!

What I do hope is they admit the same amount of people off the waitlist as they did last year. It went from 73 to 193(out of 750 something) Unbelievable, I hope we get that lucky this year too! Crossing my fingers for all of us…
