what can people do to get off the waitlist?

Waitlisted...

I was hoping to get accepted to one of the top ranked schools I applied to but it hasn't happened. I applied to 5 and so far have gotten 1 rejection (MIT - :( - this was my first choice) and 3 waitlists (JH, Stanford, Caltech). Considering that the decision I am still waiting on is Harvard, I am not getting my hopes up.

My suggestion is to stay on the waitlists - you never know which one may turn around and offer you a spot. GL tapedduck.

If we're sharing stories, here is where I stand today:

MIT - Reject

JHU - Waitlist

CMU - I don't know, haven't sent me anything yet but that might be code for reject

University of Maryland - Haven't sent me anything, way too late, I have no clue why

WPI - admit

Rose Hulman - admit

RIT - admit

Honestly, I got a couple of chances threads on CC and they were basically 100% accurate, although I applied to a big range of schools, so I'm not all that surprised.

al6200 - mit/jhu aside, you definitely have some great choices. good luck.

wowow 10% get on the waitlist! Thats a lot in percentage terms. Suddenly, I don't feel that good. lol getting on the wait-list is not any special thing considering rejection. aaaah i hate life. My admissions:

UCI- Accepted with regents
UCSB- Accepted with honors
UCD- Accepted
UCSD- Accepted (Bioengineering <--- My safety for Hopkins)
UCLA- Rejected (<---- Was not even expecting this but I applied to two impactd majors in Engineering sooo....)
UCB- Rejected (<--- I hate this, but it was a possiblity. So idc)

I HATE how UCs evaluate applicants. Its always numbers!

Stanford- Rejection (EA)
JHU- Wait-listed
CMU-??
USC-??
Cornell-??

I am currently 4.5/8 Yesssss! Thats more than 50% woohoo! :)

That waitlist post from last year depresses me. The whole no-guarantee for aid thing. And the stats from the past few years of letting people off the wait-list.

Gah.

I'm kinda sad about how they pick people. They said it was based on need, so it looks like if you have financial need then you're basically screwed.

So, think they're going to draw off of the waitlist this year?

I really hope so, Johns Hopkins is my dream school in every sense of the word. Now - how to express that in a letter of interest.

All right guys here's the deal. I was waitlisted last year by JHU and then admitted. I was also one of the first to hear (not because I'm supaspecial but because my college counselor knew someone).

I found out on May 15th that I was accepted. I'm sorry guys, but that's the earliest you'll hear. At this point, JHU took 20 people off of the waitlist, then waited a week and took ~15 more. The remaining people were smattered throughout the summer, for a grand total of 50sih accepted.

The lesson? Don't get your hopes up. Love the schools you were accepted to. Stay on the waitlist, and send an updated e-mail about any awards or honors you may have received, but only if you've received them. I know there's no ranking on the WL but the adcom has some idea already of who they'd want to admit in that first flush of 20. So do that, then go out and buy a sweatshirt for your next choice school. I got a lot of GW gear lying around my house haha.

Oh man I need to stop procrastinating!!!

Ugh, any way of knowing how likely you are to get off of the waitlist?

I know what I'm thinking - waitlist chances threads!

Anywho, great advice MasterMargarita. I think I'm going to go to WPI, but I'll stay on the waitlist for JHU just in case!

Well, it depends on what college you're going to. Arts & Sciences waitlistees are in a separate pool from those at Whiting. Me not going to Whiting does not affect someone who applied to A & S in the slightest bit.

MasterMargarita,

Did you apply for financial aid, and, if so, did you get enough after making it off the waitlist?

no i didn't apply for any. Sorry!!

Did you send in any special materials?

I called and got all the info on how to get off the waitlist (or try). You should send your admissions rep your accomplishments since February and a letter outlining why you feel JHU would be good for you.

As for me, I am not accepting my waitlist spot b/c I got a full ride to Case and a $2400/year package to UChi. I really would have liked to have JHU as an option, but I gave it a shot....

what kind of financial aid can we expect if we are on the waitlist? will there be any grant money left?

yeah, if financial aid is drastically reduced, then i'm definitely NOT going to even attempt getting in...northwestern has already given me enough stress...

Anybody know the chances for getting in to the BME program if we were waitlisted? What I mean to ask is if it's even possible at this point. I'm in a unique situation since I don't think Hopkins received my supplement, so I'm wondering if I have a chance if I do submit it, since our applications will be reviewed again anyway.

I sent in no special materials besides an e-mail updating the dean on my recent activites/awards/acomplishments (I was the captian of the debate team and we won the state tournament; I received a really prestigious scholarship from my school).

I swear to god that is all I did. In the end, it is entirely out of your hands.
