Hey, I just called up Harvard Admissions office today and was told that some people have already been admitted from the waitlist. Did any of you waitlisted get admitted??

If Harvard has only admitted ten or so students off the waitlist so far, it seems doubtful you will find any of them here. However, it is possible that people might have heard of other people getting in.

I was just called today and offered deferred admission to the class of 2010! I accepted. Good luck everyone else!

aww. im so happy for you. thats so nice

How does a deferred admission work? Will you have to take the year off? Have you been accepted to any other Ivy?

Yes, I will take a year off and enter Harvard one year from this fall. It works basically the same as if I had been offered admission to this year's class, and chosen to defer. It actually works out very well for me, because I wanted to defer anyway. No, I wasn't accepted to Yale or Princeton, the other two Ivys I applied to.

Congratz harvardhopeful2! But actually that makes me wonder: if we request a deferred admission, will that increase our chances of getting in?

what are you going to do during your year off? i would defer a year if i could find anything meaningful to do, but i can't seem to.

Thanks! Well, I told the admissions committee that I would be happy to accept a deferred admission if that's what they wanted to give me. So I didn't request one, but I did tell them that I would take it if it was offered. I have to get a couple of surgeries during my time off, and then I'm hoping to get a political internship.

Harvardhopeful,

so you were waitlisted, then you told them if you can't get in this year, you'd also accept a deferred acceptance, and they just gave that to you?

Well, yes I was waitlisted, and I did tell them that I would accept a deferred admission. But they didn't just give it to me because I told them I would take it. I think it is the standard procedure to offer a handful of students admission to the following year's class. I refer to the following paragraph out of "Time Out or Burn Out for the Next Generation" by William R. Fitzsimmons, Marlyn McGrath Lewis, and Charles Ducey:

"Perhaps the best way of all to get the full benefit of a "time-off" is to postpone entrance to college for a year. For almost thirty years, Harvard has recommended this option, indeed proposing it in the letter of admission. In addition, after all the places in the current class are filled, a small number of outstanding applicants have been offered the opportunity to come to Harvard for the subsequent academic year. Normally a total of about fifty to seventy students defer college until the next year."

I was simply aware of this, and subsequently told the admissions committee that if I was offered "deferred admission" then I would be delighted to accept.

Well, I finally received my rejection letter (im from MA, dated 6/1) after, umm...November-June, half a year of waiting. Anyway, good luck to everyone!

Has anyone who was placed on the Harvard wait list NOT heard anything yet?

Our daughter is still waiting to hear something...

Byerly, do you think that there will be a "phase II" at Harvard?

Quote from the Parents Forum: (Sorry, but I don't know how to make the quote boxes!)

There is no reason to think that there won't be the normal number of people taken off waitlists as we get into "phase II" of the process.

Put the word quote in square brackets at the beginning and /quote in square brackets at the end.

Has anyone who was placed on the Harvard wait list NOT heard anything yet?

i haven't

There was a phase II. It was for deferred admission to the Class of 2010-mostly legacies.

Please excuse my ignorance and not to brak the mood but-

Hows the waitlist system organized, by this I mean how do they determine which students to place off the waitlist ?

three kids at my school got off the harvard waitlist: two massively connected, one with massive school support.

Justice-were they offered a spot in the class of 2009 or the class of 2010? When were they offered these spots?
