Waitlist updates?

IMHO this is just another example of the apparent turmoil that has been going on in the Admission’s office this year. The Director is leaving so if this person is still involved they are functioning as a lame duck. This tends to result in decisions by committee without substantial authoritative leadership and direction. Decisions by committee’s tends to be laborious and time consuming and with all the offered student options this year (at least for some students) this will further complicate the final decision making process. For one example: deciding to offer a student Fall admission to a student who has already placed a deposit and accepted the AU Program for the Fall, and having this student decide to enter in the Fall, will result in a domino effect with multiple subsequent possibilities ensuing. You probably would need a computer program to figure this all out in regards to all the spaces you will need to have to cover both the Fall and Spring admits. Perhaps this is why it is taking so long to make waitlist decisions. Just my take on the situation. Good luck to all those still waiting to hear. With the apparent relatively high number of “hits” to this thread it looks like there are still a fairly large number of students waiting to hear.

agreed @Mwallenmd I can’t imagine how they would figure it out… It if were my child at this point in time. I would proceed with my child’s second choice and move forward. I can’t see them taking names off the list given the limited housing options. At this point everyone should have a deposit in at their second choice school so I would move forward and if, by chance UD offers admission it can be a pleasant surprise. Good luck to all. Hope the kids are happy wherever they land.

The director (Aviles) is gone – already started new job at University of Buffalo. And the interim director (Douglas Zander) is one of three finalists for the director position. Mr. Zander participated yesterday in an open forum on campus while the other two candidates are having open forums next week. Here’s an article: http://www.udel.edu/udaily/2015/may/admissions-search-050115.html

So, @Mwallenmd and @lefty1, the period of flux will likely continue for some time and next year may bring even more changes. I completely agree with @lefty1 that those like my son on the wail list should be 100% prepared to go elsewhere. His New Student Orientation at Penn State is in 10 days, so absent any word from UDel before then, it’s full steam ahead as a Nittany Lion.

I just re-read my post and see I called the wait list a ‘wail list.’ An innocent typo, but perhaps an accurate, ‘freudian’ slip’?

I did call this morning and was told students should start hearing the middle to end of May

I am going to stick my neck out here and predict that UD will be offering Fall acceptance to at least some students off the waitlist. Even with all the possible turmoil going on in the Admission’s Office I find it hard to believe it would take 2 weeks to make a decision to take no one in off the waitlist. I suspect they are trying to come up with a system that would be as fair as possible considering all the categories of students who have accepted placement on the waitlist: students who have already accepted Spring admission; students who have been accepted to the DC Program; students on the waitlist for the DC Program, and students who have just accepted wait list placement. Except for the 50 students accepted into the DC I have no idea how many students are in each of these categories.

I guess you could argue that it would really be impossible to come up with a process that all students on the waitlist would consider to be “fair”, so that therefore they would just decide to take in no one off the waitlist. However, if they have spaces available (which they should know by now), I would find it unlikely that they would not want to try to fill up these spaces. I do agree that students on the waitlist should proceed with their secondary plan (whatever that may be) but I still feel that UD will be offering at least some students acceptance off the waitlist for the Fall. IMHO, unfortunately for UD, some of the students offered such placement will decide to go elsewhere anyway and UD will loose out on some fine students. In the past I have known many students who were accepted to UD off the waitlist and a number of them ended up on the Dean’s List at UD. Perhaps at least some of them felt they had something to prove!!!. Again good luck to all of those still waiting to hear.

Called today and was told they will not be taking anyone from the wait list :frowning:

The Board of Trustees meets tomorrow & receives the report from admissions. That’s when they’ll disclose how many deposits they received. If its close to 4,000, like last year, I doubt anyone will get in off the wait list.

Pull the trigger already to take the kids (and their parents!) out of the misery of waiting and holding back on moving forward! I’m sure there are kids holding onto the sliver of hope until they (we) get that final “I’m sorry” email or letter.

Wow- seems like everyone is getting a different answer when they call admissions. I really wish they would offer consistent answers!

I know someone who was told by admissions last week it is highly unlikely they will take anyone from the wait list this year.

^^^ Well that is disappointing. It’s surprising it is taking this long just to take no one. Last year students were notified on 5/7 that there were no openings according to posts on CC.

Just got the email - not accepted. :frowning: She is going to St Joe’s In Philly. Good luck to everyone.

Just checked my son’s portal (looking for the final dagger)… it changed today. Until today it had a few lines with thanks for accepting the wait list offer, we’ll let you know after May 1… now it says, simply: “Once your decision is finalized, official notification will be sent via mail.” (I think that was the verbiage pre-wait list also). I guess he can expect a thin envelope in next day or two.

I just got an email saying they weren’t able to move me into the fall class due to the unusually high number of students who accepted their offer of admission. Did anyone get accepted off?

I assume you had accepted the Spring admission offer. Do you plan on starting then? If so what are you going to do in the Fall (CC classes, something else)?

@wa7945 Best of luck! I’m sorry to hear your news . but… there are so many good colleges out there that it will be rewarding when we see how happy our kids are no matter were they end up, so many colleges now have learning communities and leadership weekends etc etc…and the more I looked into it I realized there are a lot more similarities between a lot of colleges then I initially realized. Thanks for all your posts. You are a CC staple and a great parent to be involved!!

Today or yesterday status on D portal changed from ‘active wait list’ to ‘applied’. the message below t “Once your decision is finalized, official notification will be sent via mail” is still there… so I guess mail will come shortly. after seeing the past few days posts… dreading the mail. Happy to have the CC support of you all. Our online family

FYI> (not so) fun fact. My friend got email in the middle of afternoon of May1st (her D was accepted but she didn’t plan to atttend UD after all ) that UD was not accepting any more deposits. That sounded odd because you should have until 11:59:59 May 1st I think to make deposit . Maybe the system blew up with so many deposits on May 1st?

Well my son did get the same email as @wa7945’s daughter and @iok9087 – “unfortunately,” “not able,” “unusually large number.” Fortunately he’s happy he’ll be going to Penn State and while UD will sting for a short bit, he’ll get over it quickl Good luck to @tennisgirl6’s daughter and all the others we’ve ‘suffered’ with from the acceptance board to the wait list board. Been fun to share the ups and downs. Maybe I’ll see some of you around when I come back to worry about my Class of 2021 son… Good luck everyone. For the kids, enjoy college! For parents, enjoy knowing we’ve done our best and it’s time to let 'em blossom!
