waitlist vs. deferred

hey guys, i'm new to this board and was just wondering what the difference was between being waitlisted and deferred... as i was deferred early decision 2 from wash u. do people on the waitlist have a better chance of getting in or is it vice versa? also... does anyone know the statistics for students who get deferred from wash u and how many eventually end up getting accepted? is it pretty much hopeless or do they generally take a lot of deferred students? alright, thanks guys!

Only people who apply early decision to WashU can be deferred. To be deferred means that they will consider you along with the rest of the regular decision applicants. They just want to compare you to the rest of the applicants once they have a better feel about their pool. The waitlist is the last resort.

Waitlist is like saying "oh, we'd accept you, but we don't have enough room to admit you" so you basically are put on a list and when those who were accepted decide to go to other schools and spots become available, you have an opportunity to get in.

Deferal means that u are kinda borderline and they don't want to outright reject you as they want to see other factors such as mid year grades to make their decisions so they defer their judgement until the regular decision round.

Deferals generally occur with ED applications and waitlisting usually occurs only with RD applicants.
