Does anyone know if Smith informs some of the applicants before May, or do nobody find out till the first week in May? I am so nervous.

My daughter who is also waitlisted got a letter today with a list of FAQ, and they say that they will not notify anyone that is waitlisted until after the May 1 replay date. They state that the latest one will be notified is by July 1st if you are being offered admission off of the wait list.

Fwiw, here is my advice to waitlisted applicants, cut-and-paste from another thread:

=========

Note to waitlistees.

Don’t give up hope.

First, honestly decide: if Smith gave you an acceptance off the waitlist, would you go?

If the answer is “Yes” or any variant like “Hell, yes!”, then proceed as follows. If you are uncertain, do not do this.

Let them know that they’re your first choice. Make their job easy. “If accepted, I will come.” While doing so, convey your enthusiasm for Smith in concrete terms as to what you’re looking forward to. The answer is unique to every applicant so I won’t give a template here.

Submit additional material. Good 3Q grades, late awards, anything. For one young lady a year ahead of my D, I wrote a recommendation letter. Her mother is Russian and isn’t confident of her written English but I was happy to fill in a quasi-avuncular gap. This was a young woman whom I had had in a car pool for something like five years and I knew here well, strengths and weaknesses both. My letter acknowledged some weaknesses but described what I saw as her potential and how the Smith environment could bring the best out in her. (I was right.) She was admitted and not only that but also had very good financial aid (single mom, modest income, not “low” but definitely “modest”).

So, if you want it, go for it. And good luck.

Thanks for the help! I sent a hand written letter expressing interest and am in the process if sending another rec from my ap stat teacher and maybe my final grades. I am going to visit next week! Fingers crossed!

According to the now-famous article on the Newsweek blog, this year there will be a lot of movement on the waiting lists.

This is due to the fact that many kids applied to, and got into, very many colleges. You can see just be reading posts on CC that a lot of the same girls got into Smith, MHC, Wellesley, etc.

Because of this, the “yield” for many schools is liable to go down, thus opening up places for those on the waiting lists.

So don’t despair, keep in touch with the admissions office and send in any info that will help move yourself up the ladder. Good luck!

I also got waitlisted to Smith. I don’t know if I should be happy or disappointed. But I really do want to go to smith although I got accepted to Cal Berkley and im considering going there. Although i am waitlisted should I go visit the campus or should I just choose one of the schools I got accepted to since Smith dosen’t notify waitlisted candidates till mid may.

Plan A is to go to a school you’ve been accepted to. But if you want to go to a school where you’re on the waitlist, you work that school. If you get in, you then go there…but you don’t count on it.

What’s not cricket is working to get off the waitlist and then deciding you’re not going to go. Visiting the campus can help you decide whether you want to make the effort. If you decide you really really really want to be there, then go for it.

Btw, we’re from California and TheMom works for UC and I’ve got to say that Berkeley and Smith are opposites in very many ways. I can’t conceive of someone liking both for undergrad.

FWIW, my daughter was waitlisted at Smith last year. She wrote to them telling them how eager she was to attend. She had her calculus teacher write to them to tell them how much she had improved in class.

SHE GOT IN!

Not just that, she also got financial aid.

So, do not give up hope (as TheDad said), and politely and enthusiastically make your enthusiasm for Smith evident (without being a pain).

Good luck! My D loves Smith, and while she probably would have done well at MoHo as well, Smith has been a great fit.
