Waitlist

Does anyone know how the waitlist is working this year? When are we supposed to find out, and how? Do they tell us if we have not been admitted?

In the last few years, Cornell has not gone to its WL. If they are, this is about the time they start contacting students. They would normally call each student first before they make an official offer, and most of the time students are given 24 hours and no more than few days to decide. I don’t believe they would contact all WL if they are not admitted. I would call the admission office now to find out where you stand. If they are going to WL, let them know your interest. Most schools want to be done with this year’s process, so it would be to their interest to take people who would say yes.

@Oldfort, they admitted 139 kids off the waitlist last year. Go to section C of this link.

Yes, you are right, they admitted 139 kids last year. I think it was previous 2 years then. Maybe WL kids will get lucky again this year. Good luck.

I called the engineering admissions office yesterday and they said that they were very likely going to go to the waitlist this year.

Turns out they did, because I miraculously got off the engineering waitlist today. There is hope! Good luck!

Congratulations, Legendary Fish!

LegendaryFish - that’s what my daughter did 5 years ago. Her GC called that morning, and miraculously she got off the WL that afternoon.

Maybe the lesson here is that you should express your interest in attending Cornell and make sure the adcoms know, to increase your chances of getting off the wait list.

LegendaryFish - Did they call you or did you receive a letter?

They called me at around 2:50 yesterday, but I didn’t pick up so they sent me this email with the following:

So then I called them back as soon as I read the above. I’m eagerly waiting for my finaid package now, which hasn’t arrived yet…

For those who got wait listed, did you guys send any updates and express interests to undergradapp@cornell.edu in the waitlist PDF file? If yes, did you receive any confirmation of receiving from Cornell? Cuz I sent mine in Mid-april and i’m not sure if they received it or not…

I sent three updates to them. They responded to two of them saying they added them to my file, but not the third. I called them up later and they confirmed that they got all three, despite the fact that they didn’t respond to one of them.

My suggestion is to call them up if you’d really like to confirm that they’ve added your updates to your file.

@LegendaryFish Thanks for reply and congratz on getting off WL :)

Did anyone else get off the waitlist? And if so, which school?

My daughter got off the wait list into the school of engineering. they told her there were 500 on the engineering waitlist and they took 20.
the admissions office called her cellphone, e-mailed her, emailed us (the parents) and called the house. They wanted her to respond quickly. which she did after she got out of her AP test.

FWIW, we visited Cornell during Spring Break (after she was wait-listed). Took the general campus and engineering college tour. Talked to an admissions officer from the school of engineering after the general School of Engineering presentation and before the tour, who told her what she needed to do to rise to the top of the wait list.
And that was to be a squeaky wheel and email every week with an update and her continued interest. Not sure if anyone read the emails, but she was told they would be printed out and added to her waitlist file. She sent in 2 additional recommendations from teachers.

Did anyone in College of Arts and Sciences get any news about the waitlist?

Oh, congrats to your daughter, dkata1, and thanks for the tips!

Did anybody from CALS get off the waitlist? As far as I know, only engineering students so far have been accepted.

I emailed Cornell a while ago asking about the waiting list, and they just said that they’ll let all the waitlisted students know about their status in a few weeks. They didn’t say if they were even going to use the CALS waitlist. I guess all we can do is hope for the best and embrace our back-up!

@Khione: Could you please be more specific? As in, when did you mail them, exactly? I sort of need an estimate for when they’ll send out decisions since I’m an international and will have visa issues otherwise!

@ZainRM: I mailed them on the 12th of May and they replied on the 13th. Their mail was like this:

Hello xxxx,

Thank you for contacting the CALS Admissions Office. The Selection Committee will be reaching out to waitlist applicants regarding their admission status within the next few weeks.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us.

Sincerely,

CALS Admissions

Obviously, ‘next few weeks’ could mean anything. By agreeing to be on the waitlist, I guess we’ve resigned ourselves to an uncertain future… I’m not sure if I regret that or not. I did ask them whether they would go into the waiting list, but they didn’t say anything on that front.

By the way, I’m an international as well. I’ve already applied to my other university for the I-20 and received the form. I’m planning to go ahead with my visa application because I’ve read that it should not be an issue (or so says Google).

That’s good, man! Where are you from, by the way? I’m from Pakistan.

My only issue is that my ‘other’ university is McGill, which is in Canada. I need to know which country I need to apply for the visa too, and soon, because, otherwise I risk being left out of both. That’s what my main problem is. Let’s see, though. I think I will probably send my documentation to the Canadian embassy for now, since everything is so uncertain as of yet with regards to Cornell. My school is CAS, by the way.

Thank you for all your help!
