So I recently got a response from UC San Diego on admissions stating that I am welcome to join the wait list, but I didn't get a normal admissions offer. So what I'm wondering is, what does that mean? I looked around a little bit and it sounds like you have a good shot of getting into UCSD from the wait list, but you shouldn't rely on it because it varies by year, is that the case? I am a computer science major, so I would be in the Jacobs school of engineering. Are there any suggestions on where I should go from here? I got accepted to UC Riverside, and am still waiting on UC Irvine for a response. UC San Diego is the school I want to go to, but I'm happy with Riverside as well. Thanks!

Did you appeal? If so, then your appeal probably got you on the wait list. If you didn’t appeal and you were originally wait listed then the deadline to opt-in on the wait list was on April 15 so you cant join the wait list anymore

Are you sure that information is correct? I did not appeal, but I did not get a response from UCSD until the 18th of this month (April). I’m also told, by UCSD, that I have until May 15th to accept the offer.

are you by any change a transfer student?

Oh whoops, I left that out of the original post. Yes I am a transfer student.

Transfer students have until May 15th to enter in to the waitlist. This means that you were on the borderline of being rejected and accepted. So after the SIR date for transfer students (June 1st i believe), UCSD will see if they have any open spots left for transfer students based on how many admitted transfers SIR’ed. If they do, you have a chance of getting in depending on how good your original application and waitlist statement is.

Okay, what is your suggestion then? Is it smarter to SIR into another college and just wait to see if UCSD accepts from the waitlist?

I believe you are allowed to accept at one college while being on the waitlist for another, but I would check to be sure. That would be the safest option.

You are supposed to accept a SIR from another college! Not a “should.” It’s a must. Wait lists are not reliable, so don’t let June 1st pass without committing to your top admission offer. If UCSD accepts you later on, you can always un-SIR the other school. You won’t get your money back, but it’s a small price to pay for having a sure place to attend this fall.
