Waitlist

I just got waitlisted. Does anyone have any idea what my chances are?

Not good. You'll be very lucky if you got in.

not true. i called admissions hoping they'd tell me where on the wait list i am or if they have a priority wait list and i found out last year they accepted 1000/3000 kids on the wait list. Although there are years where Michigan doesn't even go to the waitlist, she said its been a growing trend where ppl just have Michigan as a safety school, so fewer ppl actually end up matriculating and to get the yield they need they have to go to the wait list applicants. I'm hoping the same has occured this year

Flong did you inquire as to when umich would notify those on the waitlist?? I'm guessing mid may to early june?

also dont forget that even though alot of kids got on the waitlist, not everyone's going to stay on. i got into unc chapel hill so i just declined the thing.

Wait..you got waitlisted at Michigan...but accepted at UNC Chapel Hill? Are you in-state for UNC?

no i'm oos for both. i'm kinda surprised too. i really dont know what happened i ended up getting waitlisted at cornell (expected), but also at michigan (i thought i would get in) and carnegie (definetly thought i'd get in)... and then stern flat out rejected me. i guess its the gpa that killed me. w/e tho kenan flaglar isnt that much worse than ross and better than stern and tepper

I don't think you should quote the admissions officer on that.

Here is the site for the Common Data Set

Very few people get off of the list and I know this because of the CDS and I was waitlisted last year. Since I know some people who did get off of the waitlist last year on CC, I am assuming those numbers have not been released yet for the CDS or else the latest numbers would be posted. Also, take into account, that last year's admissions was the most competitive year in 10 years. (I was told this by an admissions officer last year), so it's hard to believe one thousand people were taken off of the list.

edit: nvm, this looks hopeless

I agree with Smurgirl. 1,000 sounds ridiculously high. I know some of the waitlisted students were admitted last year...but I would be shocked if that number exceeded 100.

Hoedown, do you have any stats on the number of students who were admitted from the waitlist last year?

Hinvestorp and Soccer_guy, it is not uncommon for OOS applicants to get into UNC and turned down by Michigan. Yes, UNC accepts a lower percentage of OOS applicants (20% vs 35%), but in terms of stats, Michigan OOS admitted applicants are just as strong ad UNC's OOS admitted students.

Yes, hoedown, do you have the stats on that? I'm curious too, since I was waitlisted last year and I'm surprised the numbers aren't listed. I know they are listed for Mich. State.

Oh wow... the CDS does not look promising at all. I know of one person who graduated last year and got in off the waitlist at U of M. I know several who didn't.

I was deferred way back in December (maybe before; I can't remember!), and I was waitlisted on Friday. A few people from my school got rejected, and a lot got deferred. Of the deferred, about half were rejected and half were waitlisted.

It does seem as though there's an upward trend in people not sending in their deposits, but regardless, the chances of getting in off the waitlist are very poor. I suppose it all depends on how high up you are on the waitlist - too bad Michigan doesn't release those numbers. I know that they say they don't rank waitlisted applicants, but there's got to be some sort of system for deciding who gets in first.

I guess it's State for me!

I believe it was several hundred, around 400 or so, although I can't recall offhand. That wasn't evenly split among residents and nonresidents.

Alexandre--- do you know which school is more competitive for an OOS transfer UMich or UNC?

I'm pretty sure UNC and UMich don't care about instate or OOS for transfer students.

I know for a fact that U Mich does not.

No wonder I got in as an OOS transfer...
