Waitlist

What's the earliest anyone has ever gotten in off of the Vassar waiting list?

The longer my son struggles to decide between Wesleyan, Bard, and Brandeis, the more he feels sure that Vassar would be the ideal place for him. He's sent some impressive additional material to Vassar Admissions, including a letter from a Vassar faculty member, but we know that the odds are still not good. We keep encouraging him to focus on the great schools that he got into, but he's dying to know when he might hear something from Vassar. Any idea?

Thanks, and any words of wisdom as to the similarities between Vassar and these other places is appreciated, too.

Skie,
Vassar has been known to take people off the waiting list all summer long; this could take a while. Your son should be preparing for the worst (or, at least second best, as far as he's concerned) and hope for the best.

Also, they can't even begin to take people off the waitlist until after they know who's enrolling.
I do know at least two people (both on my floor) who got in off the waitlist last year, so there is some hope. But do try to prepare to go to any of those other schools (which are also very good).

Has anyone gotten any waitlist news?

Your son has been admitted to some fine colleges! We are waiting for Vassar as well. Will you let me know when you get a response?

Vassar is supposed to contact people this week. Middlebury had no spots at all, Williams had 20 and gave them out.

Can you explain what you mean that Vassar takes people off the waiting list all summer long? I thought they were doing it next week only.

Hi Hopefulmom, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

I think what's meant is that Vassar will offer some waitlist spots this week (we hope), and if they are turned down a week or two later they'll offer some more, and so on.

Also, some students who accepted a place at Vassar on May 1 may decide to take a spot off another's school waitlist over the next several weeks, and then Vassar will have more places to fill from the waitlist.

I think this process is called "the summer melt" in admissions-speak.

I'll let you know as soon as we hear anything and hope you'll do the same.

I heard that Vassar is not taking anyone off of the waitlist this year.

Where did you hear this?

I just spoke to Vassar Admissions. They said they do not know yet whether they are taking anyone from the waiting list. If they decide to, they will be notifying people before the end of the month.

Wiser, I'm interested in where you got your information, too.

Last week they said they'd be contacting folks for the waitlist this week, so it doesn't look good....

Thanks, Skie. It is awfully close to the end of the month....so I have to agree that it's not too hopeful.

My son is going to Vassar and we got a notice that the class has over 700 kids enrolled which is way over the norm of 630-660. I am not even sure how they will have housing for all of these kids. Unless a lot drop out getting off of other waitlists, I don't see how they will be able to go to their waitlist. the admissions office must be saying that waiting to see how many drop off but right now the class is full.

what was the purpose of that notice?

how did you get it? via email or snail mail?

the notice was by mail and the purpose was class stats.

any other interesting information you care to share?

D just received a letter from Vassar telling her that the freshman class was full and they were releasing their waiting list. Condolences to all.

Hi,
Thanks for the update on the Vassar waitlist. It's good to let that last one go. I guess we can all just move on and get excited about the college they accepted.

My son got the letter today, too. Fortunately he's pretty psyched to go to Wesleyan so is much less disappointed than we had thought. Hope you and yours are feeling okay about this process finally coming to an end. What a year.

I got my letter the other day and I was pleasantly surprised to find that I wasn't upset by it. Vassar was my first choice when applying, but now I'm going to Wesleyan in the fall and I couldn't be happier :)

Congratulations to those accepted to Vassar, condolences to those who didn't get in, and good luck to everyone in the coming years!
