Waitlist?

In one of the classes I have bookbagged on ACES it says there is one person on the waitlist, but only 12/18 spots in the class are filled. Why is this?

Maybe they reserved some spots for seniors, juniors, etc.

Can anyone explain to me how the whole waitlist process works? thanks.

So does that mean those spots in the class are still open, or would I be added to the waitlist if I tried to sign up for that class when my window opens?

So it says that there are open spots but there is someone on the waitlist? Any way you could tell me what class so I could look at it myself? Without knowing the specific class I'd say spots reserved for seniors or something is most likely and in that case you'd waitlist but probably get in. (can't say without looking at the class though)

And for the person who wanted waitlists explained to them: It is exactly what it sounds like. The class fills up and those that still want to take it are put on a waitlist in the order they register for the class. Typically a few people will wind up dropping the class in favor of another so the first few people on the waitlist tend to get in. (depends on the class though) Another thing that happens is if the class is a required class for a major that really needs to be taken in sequence (such as many Engineering classes) then they may open up a new section to accommodate a large waitlist. This isn't an automatic thing and I don't know of it happening outside of Engineering but it does happen. Any other specific questions about waitlisting? (also if you are waitlisted and uncertain if you will get into the class emailing the professor can't hurt)

It's one of the Spanish 2 classes.

I'd go ahead and email the professor if you really want an answer. I don't really have any experience with the Spanish department so I can't really tell what is going on there but it is probably something to do with those spots being held for certain students.

I'd email the professor.

Classes are most often reserved for majors, although this would be weird in Spanish 2. Those spots will stop being reserved as soon as add/drop begins -- provided that the people they're being saved for don't snatch them up in the meanwhile.
