Waitlist

How does this work? And how long does it traditionally take? Will it be before the May 1 deadline? CMU is my son's top choice even though he has acceptances at several other high ranked universities.

you'll hear back md-may to mid-june.. after you send in deposit for another school.. thus you'll probably loose that 600$ deposit from College A f you get into CMU and switch

Does the time it takes to hear back change if you use their "priority" waitlist, and, what are the chances of acceptance on the priority and regular waitlists?

What is the priority waitlist?

Its like an early decision kind of deal.

If you get accepted off that list, you WILL attend CMU, and have to give a deposit, and loose one you gave to another school already.

When a spot opens up for admission, they use the priority first because those are the students who have high interest in attending CMU, but were waitlisted.

If you are on priority waitlist, you probably will get in. They will call you in late May. You must either accept or reject then and there. Let me note that waitlisted kids are treated as second class students. For example, there is NO NEGOTIATING for financial aid. There will never be merit aid offered waitlisted students. You can, however, qualify for need based aid.

Secondly, since you heard very late in the admission process, you will get last dibs on your housing requests.

Anyone has any idea how many students are picked from priority waitlist of CMU.

CMU is my first choice and I am in the priority waitlist in Mellon School of Science.

Are there good chance of my acceptance from priority waitlist? Thx

I hope what Taxguy said is true. I heard the same thing but I guess it would depend on how long the priority is int he first place

I just came back from a visit from CMU, and all 3 of my tour guides were accepted from the waitlist, one in my CMU school! They said that although you may not get the best freshman housing, you do wind up with the leftovers of upperclassman housing, which, in most cases, can be better, though you won't be with other freshman.
As for fin aid, they told me, and gave me a letter while I was there, that they will only look at offers from other PUBLIC schools when negotiating fin aid.

for priority waitlist people, they will call you on may 7th if you are accepted off the waitlist. for regular waitlist, you will know in june.

does sending in a supplementary rec and letter of interest boost your spot on the priority list or are the rankings done already?

Are you in priority waitlist ? I am kind of planning to visit CMU and I was wondering whether it is possible to meet admission counselor to talk about priority waitlist.

On my recent visit, you can have what they call a "waitlist session", where they explain to you in detail about the waitlist procedure, both regular and priority, as well as how your fin aid will work. They also did say that you can send in other rec letters, but they REALLY want to have a letter of interest from you, or what they called a "personal statement". Doing these things, according to them, will help increase your ranking on the list, which is done after May1st, when all the deposits for regular admission have been counted, and they see where they need more students.

pirkey, are u in the priority waitlist, which major ?

Is it necessary to send 3rd quarter grades to wait-listed schools. I have one C in AP econ
