Waitlist

I have been waitlisted at JMU & Tech (very frustrating) and was wondering what are the chances of getting off of the JMU waitlist this year? I have to decide on paying a deposit to either GMU or CNU, which is difficult enough, but desperately waiting to hear from JMU is a killer. If and when I do get accepted though, how will things look for me? Will there be any financial aid for me? Will there be any dorms available? Those kind of things... It's been a tough week for me, and I am having a hard time deciding on a number of things. Basically, any information I need to know about JMU and their waitlist will be very much appreciated. Also, what can I do to raise my chances of being accepted off of their waitlist? Thanks.

I don't know specifically about JMU, but at most schools it works like this.....after May 1st when everyone's deposits are due, the admissions office will know how many spots are open and they will start reviewing files off the waitlist = those offers go out in late May or June. It also gets down to instate/OOS etc when they fill open slots. I have heard that sending a letter of interest that includes any new information or anything you didn't include in your original application can help. You can also send in any updated grades and should send final grades if your school yr ends and they are still making offers. Your odds depend on the size of the list, how many slots open up and whether the list is ranked ( I don't know if JMU ranks their list) You can still get financial aid...but you won't get a package until you get an offer. Hope this helps....my daughter is waitlisted at UVA, UGH!

I do not know about Tech, but from JMU's website:

What is a waitlist offer? Am I on the waitlist or not?
* The admissions office has extended you a waitlist offer. We are giving you the option to choose to be on the waitlist, or to decline our offer and have your application cancelled. Please complete the Waitlist Position Acceptance Form online at secureweb.jmu.edu/admissions/waitlist/. You have received a web address in your decision letter. If you indicate your interest to our office by May 1, you will be included on the waitlist. If you do not indicate an interest, your application will be cancelled. We will only give your application further consideration for admission if you complete the Waitlist Position Acceptance Form.

What number am I on the waitlist?
* The waitlist is not pre-ranked. As mentioned above, only those students who ask to remain on the waitlist will be considered further. If we decide to make additional offers of admissions, we start the review process over and look for the strongest candidates.

How does the waitlist work?
* This year we want to enroll a freshman class of 3,960. Because students apply to multiple colleges, we must offer admission to more than 3,960 students if we want to meet our enrollment goal. We hope to enroll at least 90% to 95% of our freshman class with our initial offers of admission. Because the students, and not JMU, have the final word in whether they enroll, we cannot know exactly how many deposits we will receive by the May 1 deadline. Once the deadline passes, we’ll know how many offers we can make from the waitlist. In June, we begin to contact students who have indicated their interest. The majority of our waitlist offers are made in June. However, cancellations can take place throughout the summer and we continue to go to our waitlist to fill these cancellations, often as late as August 1.

How will I be selected to come off the waitlist?
* The Admissions Committee will reevaluate all students on the waitlist after the May 1 deposit deadline and select those who will receive an offer of admission.

What can I do to get off the waitlist?
* The most important thing to do is indicate your interest in being on the waitlist. After that, we will make our decisions based on your academic record and choose students who best fill the remaining spaces.
* You do not need to submit:
1. Additional recommendations
2. Updated transcripts (we already have your mid-semester grade report)
3. Additional essays
4. Personal interviews (we do not offer interviews)
5. Change your preference for major (we do not make admission decisions based on requested major)
* If we do not have your SAT or ACT scores, please send an updated copy to the address below. Also, if you feel that we should know of some special circumstances, please write us at:

I have to deposit at another school by May 1; can you give me a decision before that time?

We cannot make decisions before May 1. We will not have the information we need to make any waitlist offers until the beginning of June. We recommend that you carefully consider other offers you may have received. If you do not make any deposits by the deadline, you may end up with no college options for the fall. You may want to contact each individual college and ask about their refund policy for deposits. Most universities do not offer a refund on deposits. Do not make a deposit to JMU if you are on the waitlist. We cannot accept a deposit until you have been offered an official acceptance to the university.

From JMU website/Common Set Data...2008 admissions year....1547 offered waitlist position...765 accepted position on waitlist...135 offered admission.

Although, the site states it is not necessary to do anything while on the waitlist, it certainly couldn't hurt you by emailing your admissions rep and stating your continued interest. Good Luck.
