Waitlist

I was waitlisted at Bentley University and have a few questions about the whole waitlist process. If you are waitlisted you still have to make a deposit at another institution?(if they don't tell you before May 1). So I would have to make my tuition and housing deposit at another university to secure myself a spot and later tell them I am not going there if I get off the waitlist? Are there restrictions to how many deposits you can make?(I thought a deposit meant that you are confirming you want to attend the university) To all of you offered a spot at this and any other university and are not going please inform them quickly as other peoples spot are in place. Thanks

You can only make a deposit at ONE institution, just like eventually marrying ONE person (at a time). It’s an exclusive commitment. You should make a deposit somewhere by May 1 that you also want to go (as well as a housing deposit if applicable) in case you do not get off the waiting list. Some waiting lists notify as late as July–usually most institutions will inform waitlisted people at some point that they are no longer taking people off the list. Meanwhile, start travelling down the other road (the place where you have paid a deposit), so that you do not get left behind. It is usually nonrefundable money, but compared to the entire cost of college…get some plans in place. Good Luck!

Thanks for clearing things up, but I still have a question. If you can only make ONE deposit, then why do waitlists(some at least) notify people after May 1st? I mean the people who decide to wait on their waitlist and not make a deposit at another institution(as you can only make 1 deposit) are taking a hugh risk of not going anywhere if they don’t get off the waitlist.

The way it generally works is:

 1. Before May 1st, you choose a school out of the ones that accepted you, and make a deposit to it. You tell schools that waitlisted you that you want to stay on their waiting lists.
 2. Once you receive final notification about being accepted or denied from all the schools that originally waitlisted you, you again choose a school out of all the ones that accepted you (whether directly or off of their waitlist). If you choose a school that waitlisted you, then you WITHDRAW from the school you chose originally and make a deposit to the one you chose finally.

pFNMCp sums it up nicely pivo. The original school you made deposit will understand your reason for withdrawing and you won’t be penalized besides the loss of your deposit. Good luck to you and your choices

Thank you for your replies
