What’s the difference between OPEN - Waitlist classes and CLOSED - Waitlist classes? I can waitlist for both but does the OPEN option mean you have a higher chance of getting in?

Thanks in advance.

I’m wondering this too. Have you waitlisted for any closed classes? I’m only waitlisted for closed ones…not sure if that’s good or not.

how do you know if you’re waitlisted for a closed class?

i’m waitlist number 5 for chem, and number 3 for math17a. what are my chances of getting in?

When you type in the CRN number at the bottom of the registering classes page, you will see the class show up. Then it will probably say Waitlist or something…“CLOSED - Waitlist” or “OPEN - Waitlist” How did you sign up?

i put in the CRNs that i searched up last night.

hahaha guess i was so nervous that i didn’t even notice whether it is open or closed when i registered

Just curious, but what are your positions on your waitlists? and what classes? I’m like number 2 for chem 2a and number 3 for math 17a.

I just called the reg office at UCD. and they cleared some things up. If the course is closed and you waitlist, that simply means you’re on the waitlist. If it’s open, that means that someone momentarily dropped the class or w/e, and it’s open for registration/waitlisting. So it’s just a computer glitch (sort of)–just disregard it if it’s open or closed. She also said if you’re not climbing up the waitlist by the time school rolls around, you should probably drop and add another class or youll be put on academic probation or it might affect financial aid. Sucks for me because I’m waitlisted in 2 classes that I absolutely need (chem 2a/math 17a). You can check your WL position if you go to your day time schedule with the big time chart and click on the class. It will show your WL position.

i’m 10th for chem 2A Dx

you’re in a better position than i am

5th for chem, 3rd for math17a.

i feel like we should have a high chance of getting in though, those classes should have a huge number of students, and the chance of 5 or 6 dropping out of 200 is quite plausible. i also heard that they open up seats for waitlisted kids, especially for biosci majors. we’'ll just have to wait.

I waitlisted for an 17a “Open - Waitlisted” class and was waitlisted at #14.

I dropped that and added another “Closed - Waitlisted” 17a course and is currently at #4.

I hope I get this class but I don’t see people dropping math courses.

i looked up chem classes again, dropped my old waitlisted (closed) and waitlisted for another chem 2a class and now i’m 5th…

@limchi7

that was the same situation as me, but this time rather than “CLOSED” i waitlisted for another “OPEN” chem class and moved up waitlist =)

if we have to drop our waitlist position when we’re all top 5 for the waitlist or less because openings don’t come by the time school comes around…i’m gonna be so aggravated hahaha

Yes the lectures DO have 200+ people. But each chem class is really 25 people each. This includes the labs and discussion classes. Anyone can just go to lecture, but numbers really come into play when you’re in labs/dis. Yeah that’s what I heard too. There are “sometimes” when professors will set aside some space for people who really need the class. I’m in letters and science but I’m trying to transfer out. Hopefully I can get a seat if it’s only for college of bio students. This day is too intense. haha

@eatSumPhoo

yeah…but hey about the 200 kids that you mentioned…so each chem class has 200 people? i thought it was 25…max??

yeah nevermind it’s only 25

i just emailed the office asking them what my chances are and what my best course of action is now that i’m on the waitlist. i’ll keep you guys notified when i find out

And as I said before OPEN and CLOSED doesn’t really mean anything. Open just probably means there is a positive number in the Rem section. But the computers mess up sometimes because some classes have like 1 rem spot left and the waitlist is already at like 5. That probably will show up as “OPEN.” Closed is if the rem slot is 0, and the waitlist is going up. So, again, no difference.

I asked the lady on the phone what my chances were and she kept saying “we don’t know.” I doubt they will give you a straight answer since they can’t make you empty promises. The lady was insistent that I just keep checking because she is not sure when slots will free up or if I have a solid chance.

dang i hope we all get the classes that we need…!

i’m scared that if i try to drop to get into the class, i might be placed even more lower on the waitlist, you know?

Yeah bc everyone is registering right now and you may end up in a far more worse position than if you just stayed put. so sad=[

Do you guys know if I can waitlist CHE 2A when I’m already enrolled in another chem class (CHE 2AH)? I called the registrar, but the lady seemed pretty confused. Were you guys already enrolled in another chem class before waitlisting for CHE 2A? Or did you not get chem at all during orientation?
