Oh, and by the way, it's not too late to get a National Merit scholarship that's not college-sponsored. I think they're still sending those out. If you get one of those, you'll get the money no matter where you go.

really carleton? really? worst possible time to waitlist me. now i can't concentrate on finals.

Let me second pbr's comments (and maybe add a few more?):

Carleton has over the years almost mystically seemed to predict yield and has resorted to the waitlist very sparingly. BUT, this is an exceptional year. The admissions director at a top tier private (not Carleton) I spoke with last month was expecting anything and everything with this year's go around. Adcom's have had more sleepless nights filled with numbers that don't add up than ever in the past.

So expect that a LARGE number of schools that haven't historically turned to the wait list may do so this year. Think the Harvard surprise of 2008 (when they took more than 200 off the waitlist).

I would not give up hope. Understand that at Carleton it's not just PR when they talk about looking for a class that belongs there, that will thrive there, that will contribute to the wonderful interconnectedness that defines the student body. If in your heart you know yourself to be a Carl, make sure to write or e-mail admissions and be straight about what the school means to you. Know that if you "show them the love" it may actually really matter in Northfield in a way it might not in Cambridge.

Good luck to all.

for the nmf thing:
my understanding is that if i say that kalamazoo is my first choice and they offer a scholarship, then i have to go there.

so i'm wondering if i should just list carleton and possibly forgo k's $1000/year scholarship.

so unfair that they didn't accept you.

magneticpoet: I don't think anything you tell NMSC is binding. I could be wrong - you may want to consult someone who knows what they're talking about - but I think what will happen if Kalamazoo offers you a scholarship and then you go to Carleton is that you lose the Kalamazoo scholarship (obviously) and don't get one from Carleton because you didn't list it as your first choice. However, if you list Carleton as your first choice and end up going to Kalamazoo, you also get no scholarship. Tricky situation.

If carleton traditionally does a very good job guessing its yield, why did it accept such a small percentage (27% according to collegeboard) in a year when it'll most likely get a lower yield?

Son also waitlisted. Anybody out there get accepted? SATs = 2250; National Merit Finalist. I'm confused about GPA since school does not calculate one. Good extracurriculars; interview went well; good references. I thought Carleton would have been a perfect fit. Go figure.

oh no, magneticpoet! this bums me out so much after seeing you post here for the past few months. i hope whatever happens works out for you.

Jerzee - I think the 27% is for class of 2012. I don't believe Carleton gives out appl, acceptance and yields until May at the earliest.

If anything, I would expect that 27% to go down this year.

Sigh. Would it be weird to call the admissions office and ask if it was anything in particular? Maybe I can have my GC call on my behalf, I don't know. I was reading some threads about waitlists last year for advice, so right now I'm going to send a letter of interest (that hopefully won't read ILOVEYOUSOMUCHPLEASEADMITME), an updated resume, and an additional recommendation. Mostly it will be about Carleton being a great "fit" though.

Should I address the letter to the dean of admissions or should I find out who my regional counselor is and contact him/her?

And I have to figure out this whole NMF thing.

Funny tidbit for ya: I'm auditioning for America's Next Top Model. If I were to make it to semifinals, I think it would be so funny to put that down because of Colin on Make Me a Supermodel! Anyway. Yes.

I think it would be better for your GC to call - sometimes colleges are a little more forthcoming than when talking with the student.

Good luck!

My d was waitlisted too and Carleton was her #1 dream school, after the first devestation she began to feel better especially after seeing the amazing company she is in with her fellow waitlistees. Magneticpoet - I too have followed your posts and am sorry you didn't get in - I wish you the best on your efforts to get off the waitlist.

When I read how many talented, bright, active students are not getting accepted to their top colleges I am thrilled for all the other colleges that will get you! This talented peer group will be distributed out to the benefit of other colleges - perhaps some that don't 'rank' as well but are deserving of your energy!

Concerning the waitlist - does anyone know how financial aid is handled IF you get off the waitlist? Do they give the same type of award they would have offered if you were accepted right away or is it modified because of the late date?

A couple things here...

First, condolences to all those waitlisted or refused. I hope that the incredible resumes of those posting here serve as a reminder that there's not necessarily a "reason" that many get waitlisted/refused, other than that more students apply to Carleton (and similarly competitive schools) than they can possibly admit. There's an element of chance here, and I'm guessing the resumes of the admitted students are practically indistinguishable from those who were waitlisted (how could they be much better given those who have posted so far).

Secondly, I'm quite certain students can get in to Carleton off the waitlist even if they applied for aid. It will just depend on the need of students who decide to attend. If they go to the waitlist and have financial aid money left, I'd be willing to bet they'll use it. Also, Carleton's meets 100% of the demonstrated need of any student offered admittance. That would have to apply to waitlisted students as well.

Good luck with all your other decisions.

Jerzee, bingle is correct. Carleton has not released its numbers for the class of 2013.

I was also waitlisted. Sigh.

Hey all~

As someone with quite a few years behind me I can't agree more with fireflyscout and LACalum.

This year is unusual and after reading about the admissions decision process on another thread, I have to conclude that it's all in the stars, the tides, etc. There are intangible factors that are out of the applicant's control. So please be kind to yourselves and do not take it personally.

It's difficult when a school feels so right. Hang in there.

After reading the stats of all the amazing people who have been rejected and waitlisted, it's pretty obvious that Carleton has a severe case of the Tufts Syndrome(yield).

magneticpoet, I'm so sorry that you were waitlisted. I was looking for your name on the RD list. Argh.

I think you've gotten some excellent advice (have your GC call; admissions is likely to be more forthcoming) and start on a draft of that letter. The words will come.

Good luck to you!

Thanks everybody. :) I'm still waiting to hear back from Grinnell, but it looks like I'm going to deposit at Kalamazoo and see what happens with Carleton.

My GC said if they don't let me in she's not inviting them to our college fair anymore, haha. :p It's nice to have someone I have a good relationship with lobbying for me.
