Waitlisted again...wow this is intimidating

I was unfortunately (or fortunate for some ppl) waitlisted...again... by rice U.
Anybody know what percentage of ppl on waitlist get reversed each year?
I got waitlisted in Rice and Brown .... this is becoming very frustrating...

I win...I was waitlisted at Rice, Wash U, and Chicago. And all of that was after being deferred ID from Rice. I know exactly why it is that schools are so wishy-washy with me (won't reject me because of my amazing scores and ECs, won't accept me because of my mediocre grades), but it's still frustrating.

D received call 4-27 on cell phone from Rice that wait list is now accepting and she has until 5-4 to decide.

One of the classic bitter sweet feelings as she had more or less resigned self to another college.

Hope you all get a call as well.

What!? I thought rice accepts waitlist after Apr. 1st... Wow, that's quick...

So, i guess your D was on priority wailist?

Well now is the time of brutal yield management, making a class, filling up holes and filling up the empty beds.

Last year, my nephew (in far east) received a call from Wash U at 2:00 a.m. local time. He was told that unless he verbally accepts the admission, they won't send him the official letter.

I don't know what a priority wait list is.

All I know is that calls are being made. I was surprised as I thought they would wait until the final tally came in.

Here is my 2 cents: Because of soaring applications, admissions must take a new stance. Accept less people, wait list more people and control the numbers better by such a process. Hence, by the time the average "yield" is reaped, they are short in number for the frosh class. That short number is apparently already identifiable. Now, in waves they will contact eople who are wait listed.

Now, 2 cents about how this affects yield. If you are wait listed and say no -- you are not affecting the yield number as you were never accepted and never turned down the school. If you are wait listed and accept, you improve the numbers are you are listed as an acceptance who came.

Yield means a lot to a school. Each school wants a high number. I think Rice has a very respectable 40%. So, the greater the number of wait listed, the greater the yield can become. Wait list is a control device for yield.

I missed your message as I was writing at the same time.

^ True....for parents and students a college is a mystic entity for learning. For admission office, it is pure business. Their bonuses depend on selectivity and yield. For housing director it is a motel. He does not want a empty bed.

"Because of soaring applications, admissions must take a new stance. Accept less people, wait list more people and control the numbers better by such a process."

this sounds pretty general, but is not generally true. rice accepts way more transfers than other schools of similar caliber, and some other top schools (princeton or cornell, not sure) sometimes accept 0.

wow. congrats FOTB, i know you and your daughter were frustrated with the whole saga
im glad it worked out

so....transfer waitlist.....awesomeness....anyone know anything/ any suggestions?
