So I was fortunate enough to gain acceptance to duke, cornell, northwestern, nyu (full ride), and an accelerated med program. I was however wait listed by an insane number of schools including: Amherst, JHU, Yale, Princeton, UPenn, Rice, Uchicago, and Washu while I was only rejected by harvard and dartmouth. Has anyone else ever experienced such an odd situation?

These are all selective and highly selective colleges. Each is looking for slightly different things and are dealing with a slightly different applicant pool. The use of WLs has increased substantially the past several years, lots of schools seem to be following the WUSTL strategy.

I don’t see anything odd here. Lots of great choices, congrats!

p.s. take a look at the past couple of days threads and you’ll find several about extensive WLing.

Humblebrag?

^Yeah, from the title I surely didn’t anticipate reading the OPs list of acceptances.

I did not mean to brag I got some great acceptances but I’ve never seen someone wait listed to so many schools. I listed harvard summer school for 2 summers and a letter of rec from the head of the chem department at harvard (ironically they were one of my 2 rejections the other being dartmouth). Do you think schools wait listed me to gauge my interest in attending? My stats aren’t insane (SAT 2210 with 750 math 1, 770 chem, and urm). I mean decent but definitely not to be wait listed almost everywhere

Dont want this to sound the wrong way. But you are high stat URM and I think got WL by a lot of colleges who may have be holding on to you to fill the URM stat. So instead of a reject from yale, princeton you got WL. WUSTL wait lists everyone - and especially those that they think are not going to commit. If I were you and my first choice is in my WL, I would accept that wait list. However you got wonderful options already.

Not ironic at all, Pay to Play summer programs are mainly money makers and not a big plus for admissions to a school like H, even when it’s their own program. LORs are important for what they say about the applicant, not about who sends them.

Honestly, your results are not unusual and to spend any time trying to figure out exactly why you were accepted/denied/WLed is fruitless and a waste of the time you could be spending enjoying your good fortune and what remains of your sr year.

was wait listed at vanderbilt just now. That makes 9 wait lists, 2 rejects, and 6 acceptances. 9 wait lists seems crazy

I just wrote a long response to your applying to 17 schools, but I nixed it because you’re not listening to anybody anyway.

You just want to moan and groan, and truthfully, you have no reason to. Move on.

“Waitlisted almost everywhere! WHAT DOES THIS MEAN!”

What a dishonest thread title.

Almost everywhere meaning 9 schools which seems unheard of. I mean its usual to get wait listed to some schools but not to so many. I don’t mean to be ungrateful or arrogant its just that I want to try to figure out what ticked these schools off.

Geting acceptances is not a game of getting trophy letters. Your results are excellent, and you need to either accept the wait list of the school you really want or enroll in one of your acceptances. Really, what you are doing is fruitless, pointless and all speculation. In any case, well done, but do not blow it by seeming petty.

NOTHING ticked the schools off.

You applied to at least 17 schools (including a BS/MD), all of which (except perhaps WUSTL) require individualized supplements in order to produce a strong application. It’s very hard to do this with so many schools. What the WLs should tell you is that you were obviously academically qualified for these schools, but there wasn’t enough in the qualitative part of your application to sway the adcoms in your favor. And that’s not surprising given the number of applications you submitted; IOW, you might have done better with stronger applications to fewer schools.

Enough said, best of luck!

Um, it isn’t unheard of – lots of students are getting WL at multiple schools – and if you ticked them off, they aren’t going to WL you, they’re going to reject you. Maybe the reason the number is so high is because you applied to so many. Basic math

You’ve been wait listed by some of the most prestigious schools in the world, so don’t be in disbelief.

My kid got wait listed in 5 schools out of 7 schools she applied. Now she is feeling it would have been better if we applied for few more schools. It is getting very difficult with wait listing concept…She is top 2 in school with good act score and lots of extracurricular activities. Universities are getting around 30,000 application but they have less acceptance.
