My S was a first alternate at Pace last year. He received an offer from Pace during the first week or so of April but ended up accepting an offer from a different school. Unless Pace is 2 deep in alternates, that spot went to the general wait list.
I think some MT schools use different terms for the very same thing. Then, there are different terms for different meanings/purposes too.
Generally speaking (but again, this can differ from program to program as to their definition or use of a term), a “hold” is like a deferral. It means you are still in consideration until they make all the final decisions and offers of admission. It is sorta like making a cut before the process of acceptances is finished by April 1 (in some cases before that point). A wait list typically means that the class has been selected and offers have gone out (by April 1) and the wait list is utilized if the school hasn’t yielded enough students to fill the allotted spots in the class by May 1. Most schools (Syracuse and NYU are examples) accept more than the number of slots available and only go to the wait list if they don’t fill the slots. Some schools only accept the exact number of spots in the class (CMU and Otterbein are examples) and utilize the wait list if not everyone takes the offers of admission. At CMU, their wait list is called Priority Waitlist (or at least one of their wait lists is called that) which is a very short list they will go to if not all slots are filled and if you are put on this Priority Waitlist, you only have 48 hours to accept or decline the offer if one is made…my D was on this so I know first hand…whereas other schools will give you more time to decide).

This one is very disappointing to my D even though she would have needed great financial aid to go–and she was aware and realistic about that. It’s just been a school she’s looked up to since she was about 10; it would’ve been very exciting to get a yes!
We feel her pain. S had similar experience last year. In less than a year form now, your D will be somewhere that’s “right” for her.
