Actually I believe that waitlist do not offer many chances. But Amherst’s letter is really kind…So I wonder if…
They said they hope and they may use waitlist this year, does that mean anything or is that just politeness?
Does Amherst rank in the waitlisted students?
And can anyone tell me roughly the ration of WLed to Rejected?
I am international…And I require financial aid (3/4 maybe)

I am sending this email in advance of your official written notification of the Amherst College Admission Committee’s decision on your application for admission to the Class of 2012.

Understanding that your distance from Amherst may cause some delay in your receipt of your official notification letter, I am writing to inform you that after long and careful consideration, the Admission Committee has decided to place your name on the waiting list for Amherst’s Class of 2012. If you wish to keep open the possibility of attending Amherst, please let us know as soon as possible. If a space becomes available after May 1, 2008, you will be among those we will consider for a place in the first year class. Specific details regarding how to inform our office of your continuing interest will be enclosed with your official notification letter. Should you decide to make other college plans, we would appreciate your notifying us of that as well.

Although I cannot forecast precisely the decisions of those to whom we have offered admission, I am hopeful that we will be using our waiting list this year.

I congratulate you on your fine record of accomplishments which deserves a much more fitting recognition than I can provide right now. I hope you will remain interested in Amherst and that you will choose to hold a place on our waiting list. I hope also that I may ultimately have a chance to offer you a place in the Class of 2012.
