So I got wait listed at Deerfield and i live right in the area, a 5 minutes away. What are my chances of getting in? And when will i find out for sure?! Thanks for the help!

It depends on what grade you are applying for. If you are applying for sophmore year you have probably no chance of getting in because of the over enrollment. If you are a freshman you probably have a decent chance, write the admissions people an email saying how badly you want to attend.

i’ll be applying for 9th grade. and thanks!

slim unfortunately

Typically BS reserve a small percentage of seats for local residents. If your scores are good, good ECs, grades, it is difficult for a local BS to reject you. Your parents should contact the local city council members, county commissioners, mayor or local politicians, chamber of commerce and request them to put some pressure of your behalf (write letters, call etc). School are typically required to help foster local community development, education etc. That is the reason some seats are reserved for local students. Unless you have poor grades and poor recommendations or other issues. School have sole descretion on offering acceptance to a potential student.

In fact when we visited Deerfield, St Paul, Andover and Exeter during summer, all our tour guides were local students attend BS, since schools were closed for summer. Some of these students only received about 65% to 75% in their SSAT scores.

The issue is, it may be too late to use the local resources to put pressure on the school, since the schools may already be fully enrolled by now. Still no harm in trying. Act on it ASAP.

9th grade is easier to get in. As you apply for higher grades it gets harder.

Best of Luck.

Newebs,

I second you on the advice. During revisits, and making a decision, we purchased he book “the Headmaster” and found that the history of DA included a large part of local boys and commitment to the community at large. I believe, way back in the day the boys would sometimes help the community farmers with harvesting the crop.

It might be late now but surely worth trying and preparing for next year :-)

Good luck

newebs: Admission may be more difficult at many schools in the later years, but at Deerfield, it’s just the opposite. Freshman year is the most difficult for admission and then sophomore year. Junior and Senior/PG years are about the same. This year’s stats aren’t out yet, but the freshmen girl over enrollment anomaly last year likely impacted sophomore admission numbers, so sophomore year may be more difficult this year. We should know more soon.

Also, day students are twice as likely to be accepted than boarders. This is probably skewed by faculty and staff children acceptance though.

CKSABS,
Would you happen to know approximate chances of getting off the waitlist at Deerfield as in incoming Junior?

Sorry, I don’t know your chances. I do know that the few, if any, that may come off the list typically fill a specific “need”.

I think i saw somewhere that Deerfield will not be looking into its waitlist until something big changes over summer. They will keep the waitlist open until July. Have hope!!!

@exoveerotch… have hope, but seriously, it’s time to make other plans.

Did anyone get the email saying the wait list was closed?
