Woww I feel bad for y'all. I was deferred > accepted at U chicago, but just make sure to continue to show interest, and everything will hopefully work out fine. You will probably have a better shot at getting off the waitlist at u of c (just a hunch)

I got deferred by Chicago, then waitlisted there, now waitlisted at duke. I did all I could to turn that deferral into an acceptance, but nothing helped. New teacher rec, countless awards, invented a cure for senioritis. But enough sob stories.

About 1000 people are waitlisted every year. As many as 200 will get in, as few as 1. People have gotten in as early as April 27th in past years, but most come around may 3rd-15th. They keep coming until duke sends letters to all waitlisted applicants saying they cannot be given a spot in the class. You have hope until you get that letter. People have received emails, phone calls, and i guess conventional snail mail informing them that they are accepted off the waitlist. This acceptance is not binding, but if you aren't going to accept that spot in the class I urge you not to accept the spot on the waitlist. There are people out there who would do anything to go to duke, and these are the people you (and the adcom) have to consider when deciding on the waitlist.

I got waitlisted from Washu, then Brandeis, then Chicago, then Duke. Yay! :) Isn't this just one huge waitlist party :P It'd be amazing if I got waitlisted at every single school I applied.

By "these people," do you by any chance mean yourself?

Yes, I would love to go to Duke above all else. I am going to decline my spot on Chicago's WL so that everyone who wants to go there has a better chance. It's like applying to schools to which you have no intention of going just to see if you can get in. Be considerate is all I'm saying

To answer your question, they don't know that they'll accept 200 of them. The whole point of the waitlist is to allow for flexibility when yield is uncertain.
