Waitlisted at Northeastern, but ACCEPTED AT BOSTON COLLEGE?????

Okay. So a classmate of mine was accepted EA at Boston College, but recently found out that she was waitlisted at Northeastern. She's not very smart, but her mother went to graduate school for a year at BC (which could have gotten her in?).

I just don't understand how this less-than-stellar student could have been accepted to BC. I know she didn't pass 2000 on her SAT, her GPA is in the B- range and it obviously wasn't her essay since she didn't get into Northeastern.

Maybe this is for the Boston College forum, but HOW IN THE WORLD did she get in? Is BC REALLY that alumni-focused? It makes me think of BC in such a negative light!

Any insights? Answers are much appreciated. Thanks.

To me, it just sounds like you are jealous…Accept it, she got in, and the adcoms thought she would fit in at the school. ADCOMS> YOU

Why would I be jealous? I got into YALE early. I really don’t care about BC. I just don’t understand how she could have been admitted in the EARLY applicant pool (I did not apply to BC early).

Just luck of the draw maybe. Is she a URM?

So you think that legacy status, grades, test scores, and an objectively-scored essay are the only criteria that those schools use to decide who gets in?

No. She’s white, blue eyes and blond hair.

i actually do hear that BC is pretty alumni-focused. but waitlisted at NE too, weird, haha.

Why does it matter? :)

Try being happy for her. Does it really affect you why she got into BC?

HOnestly, WickedCoolDude seems incredibly spiteful. You are probably the type of person who likes the attention of getting into a great school and doesn’t want anyone to have the same happiness from your school. They don’t randomly accept students just because their mom went there. Also, did you think that maybe Northeastern waitlisted her since they saw the other schools she’s applying to, knowing she probably wouldn’t accept Northeastern’s offer even if she got in? That’s why some people get waitlisted at their safeties and then get accepted to an Ivy.

I also agree that this topic seems kind of petty… And as other have said the adcoms obviously saw something in her application that saw her as a fit, and I’m sure it wasn’t her mom’s 1 year there. We don’t know why they make their decisions, we just know we should be happy for those who get into great schools.

i think thats one of the many drawbacks about college admissions, judging people
im guilty of it too- there are people i see applying to schools i know i can’t get into, and i know i get better grades then them, and i think hm, they’re not getting in. but maybe they will- the process is in all honesty very unpredictable
when you look at your classmates acceptences be glad and rejections be sad- don’t judge them on anything and don’t question it- i doubt you would want people wondering if you actually deserve your acceptance into yale

If you already have an acceptance to Yale, why would you care if anybody else gets into a reach school. I mean, it would be understandable to be spiteful if you hadn’t gotten into a top school. But you did, so why not just be happy for everybody else’s successes?

I don’t understand why you are all getting so upset – this is a legitimate topic. BC is a top 34 school, and I was questioning the competitiveness of their admissions pool since she was accepted EARLY (usually the best applicants apply early).

I don’t need attention – I go to an incredibly competitive private school. Everyone gets into great schools. My best friends were accepted to Brown (ranked 10), Wharton @ Penn (ranked 5) and Columbia ED (ranked 16). I’m not a whining idiot who’s spiteful of everyone else.

One underachieving classmate was accepted to BC and waitlisted at Northeastern. There are 41 students in my class, and although this girl hasn’t told us her rank, from talking to everyone else in my graduating class, she can’t be any higher than 35.

So the rest of us applying to BC (everyone in the top 20 at my school) are scratching our heads. Is there anything wrong with questioning a college’s integrity in its admissions practices? Are any of you so familiar with BC that you can brush this topic off?

You people are too sensitive. Really. You are attacking me personally for making a comment on someone else’s ACADEMIC qualities. Hm.

StevenWheatland, thank you for judging me so quickly. I for one would put some serious thought into properly wording my comments before posting them on a college forum. That way, they wouldn’t come out na

ok ok calm down everyone.

First, wickedcooldude, I totally understand where that question regrading your classmates is coming from. I sometimes wonder about that also. However, from the very first post you made, you kind of sound upset (jealous also) and very very surprised by the fact that your friend just got into BC. Well, she got accepted and thats the end of it.

Second, everybody else, just ***ing calm down and lets just talk ok?

The problem with these forums is that you can’t understand the tone of the post. If anyone got the wrong message from my post and capitalizing words, sorry. But I’m not the one who read too much into the post.

This is just another example of the observable fact that college admissions is complex. Schools really do look at a lot of factors, and they weigh them differently. It’s not just a numbers game. You can find that comforting or annoying as you prefer.

WickedCoolDude, whether intentional or not (I’m going to guess the latter), your first post came off as incredibly rude towards this girl, who you made out to be a person who doesn’t deserve to get into BC. The thing is, you’re not the adcom at BC. There isn’t a set GPA, SAT score, and number of extracurricular activities you need to get into colleges (except a select few, like the UCs I believe, but this is BC we’re talking about). Who knows why she got into BC? Maybe her teacher recs pulled her through. Maybe her essays made a connection with someone at BC, that didn’t make such an impact at Northeastern. And you weren’t merely “commenting” on this girl. You were attacking her, saying she didn’t deserve to go to college she was admitted to. Who are you to determine what she deserves or not? The adcoms have already done that.

You also said you were viewing BC in a negative light, which seems to do with its competitiveness, as you said in post #13, which is completely ridiculous. A school’s quality shouldn’t be related to the admissions department, but the school itself: the classes, the professors, the campus, etc.

You need to take a step back, as we all do in this thread, and realize that in the end, we’re all going our separate ways. This girl’s admission isn’t going to affect you, so let her be happy and celebrate that acceptance in peace. Ten years from now, this isn’t going to matter at all. Spunaugle is right; this is “petty”.

Logical? Maybe not, but that’s what college admissions is. Adcoms are humans after all.

Here’s an insight: you’re a ******bag.

What in God’s name would compel you to create this thread? I mean, what could possibly have been going through your mind as you decided to post this? “Hmm, I need another [subtler] way to boast about my Yale acceptance. Maybe if I make a staggeringly baseless thread questioning the rationale behind a classmate’s college acceptance, it will facilitate the perfect opportunity for me to slyly drop in the fact that I got into Yale and that I go to a ‘competitive prep school!’ Damn I rock.”

And he doesn’t even stop there:

Amazing. You really can’t even comprehend how ridiculously childish you sound. Do you know what the word “tact” means?

You epitomize the reasons why people hate the Ivy League. For your sake, you should be glad you didn’t go to a public school, because you unequivocally would have gotten the **** kicked out of you on a daily basis.

I was accepted to Yale because of my incredible test scores, shining transcript and amazing extracurriculars, which reflect the achievements of a typical Yale applicant.

wow… if the typical yale applicant is a doosh then your right- you are typical
your obviously egotistical and feel suprior to this poor girl, who probably is not as bad as you make her out to be
the way your so up in her business- know her sat, gpa, etc. makes me think your the type of person who peers at a person’s grades behind thir back then compares it to theirs to make yourself feel better.

BC loves legacies. Loves loves loves them.

But also, college admissions are really random. A friend of mine with 2070 SATs got rejected by James Madison, Elon, and UMD - yet another friend with a 1890 got in to all three schools. Weird stuff.
