I got waitlisted at Duke, and accepted at Penn. I still haven't decided whether I actually want to go to Duke over Penn. They're equal at this point.

If I get added to the waitlist and get accepted to Duke, do I have to go, or can I still pick Penn?
Should I even bother with the waitlist at Duke, or should I just go to Penn?

You don't have to go to a school if you're accepted off the waitlist.

Put your deposit down for Penn (you're going to have to anyhow) and get on the Duke waitlist. Send a few extra things in if it's not too much of a bother. If you don't get in at Duke, it's a moot point. If you do, then you can make the choice about which you prefer.

Thank you. I'll consult my college counselor on things to send. My grades should be surprisingly good third quarter too.

The exact opposite happened to me. I'm gonna hang around on Penn's waitlist and see what happens.

I would have a good think. If, after everything, really can't make a decision, I would stick with Penn and not bother with the waitlist. It can be a bit agonizing, and I for one would want to finally pick a school and stick with it. However, if you truly think that you would be much happier at Duke, go ahead and deposit at Penn and hope for the best. From what I hear of waitlists, however, the chances of coming off are often slim to none. And really, if you honestly can't make a decision and would be happy at either, I would suggest that you increase the odds (however slightly) for someone on the waitlist who is truly dying to attend.

yeah I was waitlisted at Penn, and it was my #1.
Now I am having the hardest time choosing between Cornell and USC, and I simply don't know what to do, and which I could just have the option of Penn over both of the other two.

I might just go to Penn and save myself the trouble if it were just as attractive a choice to me.

I'll probably have to give it some more thought. I might even go visit Penn a third time...

The thing is: each school has things I want that the other school doesn't have, and I can't tell whether I would be happier at Duke or Penn right now.

I KNOW EXACTLY how you feel!

Honestly though, this is a very good dilemma to have. Congrats on the acceptance and waitlist.
