Well title explains it all. Let me be the 1st to start the thread.
Post your stats for those on the waitlist and general discussion.

Snoop1,

Did you accept your place on the waitlist? Where does Stony Brook rank on your list of schools you are considering to attend? For the Class of 2016, Stony Brook offered 2884 spots on the waitlist, with 1214 students accepting their spot on the waitlist. Out of those 1214 students, 169 of them were offered enrollment. So that means there is approximately a 14% acceptance rate for those placed on the waitlist however I’m sure this number varies year to year as there are different yields each year however similar. I’m not sure if there is a waitlist supplemental form offered by Stony Brook but if there is I recommend filling it out and listing any accomplishments or awards you have earned from the time you applied until now.

What were your grades? I was waitlisted with a 90 gpa and 2050 sat. Stony was my 1st choice, I thought I’d definitely get in.

@Bro1234, they may have wait-listed you because they think you may be using them as a safety, and are thus opening the floor to those who would most likely attend if accepted. Perhaps if you demonstrate continued interest by sending them updated transcripts for this semester, or something like that, they may reconsider. Best of luck!

@matth1995, Stony Brook nor any university will waitlist or reject an applicant because they believe the school is a safety for that applicant. Although I can see why you may think that, commonly referred to as “Tufts Syndrome” many students claim that this is the case. You can ask admissions and I’m sure they will tell you the same. Stony Brook has been receiving an increasing number of applications from year to year andthe admissions officers are forced to be more selective. I havea friend who was waitlisted this year with a 91 GPA and slightly lower SAT scores. The acceptance rate at stony brook is about 39% as it has been decreasing over the years.

We have no way of knowing whether a student considers us a “safety” school, so I can’t see how that could factor into our decision.

Chris

I got my decision today:
WAITLISTED (and somewhat baffled)

GPA: 4.0/4.0
SAT: 2300 (750M, 770CR, 780W)
ACT: 36 (36M, 36E, 35W, 35S)

Courses:
Hardest my school offers and all honors. (My school offers 7 APs.)
5 APs (+3 APs senior year), two of which I took online; scored four 5’s, one 4 (on one of the online APs).
Two college classes (Organic Chemistry and English Composition)
A’s in all classes

Extracurriculars:
Captain and Co-Captain of two academic teams, one of which was a state champion two years ago.
Finalist/winner of a few piano competitions.
Orchestra section leader and VP.
JV Tennis two years.

Also (some of this may not matter):
I am an Asian out of state student.
I applied for (and was rejected from) the Medical Scholars program.
I self-reported my grades on SOLAR instead of sending an official transcript.
My high school generally has a less than stellar reputation.

I think that my Common App essay was pretty good. Or at least it wasn’t bad enough to prevent me from getting me waitlisted at UChicago and a couple of other schools of similar selectivity.

bumppp… anyone else waitlisted? post ur stats and any comments. When will waitlisted students hear back :(

Guys, Tuft’s Syndrome. Stony Brook will waitlist high performing students who did not apply to their honors program.

How’d you not make it with those stats?? A 2300 sat and a 4.0 Gpa? that something even the top tier schools would give scholarship to. I’m in shock. @sbuadmissions can you explain why he didn’t make it!

he is just trolling this thread

Stonybrook’s STEM majors are extremely competitive these days. If you got in for any thing science related, you should feel proud of yourself.

I’m baffled as well that @weallcaresomuch was wait listed. How is that possible with those scores? Your SAT cumulative score along is in the top 1%. Also, your EC’s are not spectacular, but are good.

[Stony Brook University Undergraduate Admissions](First Year)

Above is a link to their Fall 2012 profile and it suggests that you’re way above their 50% percentiles.

If you were wait listed and still want to go to Stony Brook, just transfer in after starting somewhere else. The bar is lowered a bit for transfer students, especially SUNY ones. This isn’t to knock anyone, but as long as you have above a 3.0 you can get accepted.

@weallcaresomuch,

I am floored that you did not make it in to SBU. I’m an alumnus of the school who graduated back in 2008. I hear that SBU has gotten very competitive over the last several years. I think every alumnus says this about all schools, but “if I applied now, I definitely would not have made it in.” More people are applying to state schools because private schools are so expensive.

I hope you do get accepted because it is a great school and I had a lot of fun there. Congratulations to everyone who got in and good luck to everyone on their waitlist!
