Waitlisted at Trinity

Hi! Trinity was one of my top choices. I visited twice and interviewed. I was placed on the waitlist. I am somewhat happy with this decision, as it was a bit of a reach. However, I have some concerns. I will need scholarships and aid in order to be able to attend. Also, I cannot be on the hook, waiting until mid-summer for my decision.

I got into University of Vermont, Umass Amherst, and Arcadia with 30k in aid. I was rejected from Fordham, BU, and Tulane.

Is it worth it to go on Trinity's waitlist? Will I still be able to receive financial aid?

If I do go on the wailist, what's my next step? Should I express interest or leave them alone? If I should express interest, how so? Should I call?

This is all new for me, so I'd appreciate some help. Thanks!

You must go on the wait list and show your interest by calling! Trinity did take a fair number of wait listed students last year. The very best of luck.

I agree with liberty55, go on the waitlist, it shows enthusiasm & gives you options! You are all over the place with size of schools…which is fine…but do you want a small school or large university with huge classes freshman year>?
D2 graduated from Trin last year…fulltime job in NYC now…wonderful experience at Trin

I placed myself on the wait list today. Trinity is my top choice and money permitting I will go there if given the opportunity. I was thinking of emailing the school giving them a quick, earnest idea of my desire to attend and that tc is my top choice. Who should I contact? Any idea of what I should say?

Hi AnadKB…I just wanted to let you know as a graduate of UMass Amherst, it’s an awesome school, beautiful area and you can take advantage of the other 4 colleges in the area, Mt. Holyoke, Amherst College, Smith and Hampshire and take courses there. Not sure what you want to major in but just my two cents…Good luck!!!

Hi Avsmom! Thanks for your input. I have heard great things about Amherst, and as of now it is my likely choice of schools. I lucky to be able to receive in-state tuition to such a good college. I know a lot of kids in my school are pushed into attending due to its affordability, and end up enjoying it more than any other private institution. I would be happy to go there:)

FYI I am interested in majoring in english/ communications& journalism

Good luck AnadKB…enjoy every moment…It’s truly the best 4 years of your life!!

Here is a post somewhere here on CC of what should be included in your letter. Send it to the person who you received the wait list notification. I believe…(If anyone has another opinion, please chime in…)

Wishing you the best!!!

Here’s an outline of what your letter should include:

State your continued interest in the school up front.

Restate how you could contribute to the school community, why you feel you’re a good fit, etc. (as mini says–what makes you unique).

Update them with any new info not included in your application, especially significant info (such as big awards, a significant summer internship you have planned for this summer, etc.)

Be realistic about your chances. Some schools have waitlists but don’t admit any or many students from them because they’ve done a good job of estimating their yield. Other schools have 2 waitlists–the real one and the one for children of legacies, etc. (where they don’t want to come right out and say no but they have no intention of admitting the student).

Looks like Trinity takes a lot of students each year from their waiting list.

Yep, it definitely does. But the question for internationals is, what percentage of waitlisted internationals were accepted last year?

It is well past April 15, but I just accepted my wait list position. Is April 21 too late to be doing this? I sent an email to them explaining I accepted it this late (mainly because I didn’t even know students had to accept the position till my counselor told me). I am hoping they quickly respond with an email tomorrow, but I am preparing for a flat out no. If by a miracle they do say I am still fine, should I send another email explaining why I would be a great choice?

Matthew…I think it’s fine that you just sent it in. Do they give a deadline for accepting your placement on the wait list? I think it’s a great idea to send an email detailing what you have done since your application, even if it’s keeping a high GPA, any plans for the summer and why they should pick you. I would email it and mail a hard copy ASAP. Wishing you the best :)

@Matthew - I think your best bet would be to call Admissions directly. :)

To the people who accepted a spot on Trinity’s waiting list and e-mailed additional supplementary materials (e.g., letter of continued interest, extracurricular updates, new test scores, new grades), did you guys ever receive a confirmation response?? I e-mailed Admissions (the general e-mail) in March, but never got a reply. I’m getting worried, as I haven’t received any notifications from Trinity since our RD decisions were released. The committee has probably already begun to re-review files, so what if they never got the stuff I sent them?? The office is closed now, so I’ll call tomorrow, but, in the interim, can anyone share whether or not Trinity has responded to their e-mails about waitlist materials? Thanks!

I read somewhere that students on the wait list are unable to apply for FA all the years they attend that school. I may be wrong, but it is Roth looking into…this could be a game changer for many. UMass Amherst is fantastic, you should seriously consider it!

Do any of you know the average number of kids they take off the waiting list? I know it fluctuates yearly, but some unis will state a percent.

I got also waitlisted this year , all though last year, they accepted people with my same average and qualifications , it seems that the selectivity is higher this yeaar ,

I advice you not to wait , choose a safe option , that loos better for u , I did that because one wait list oppurtunity looses in front of regular admissions college , even if the level is lower : safer

Anyone else emailed regarding consideration for Jan semester?

Yes I did. I said I would be interested, although I care less and less each day. I enrolled in a school I love and the only thing that could get me to transfer is superior financial aid:)

Yes, email received here also.

My son also recieved the email about considering enrolling in January, but we turned that down.
