Waitlisted at UVA.... what does this mean?

Does anyone know what a waitlist means? I've got a vague idea, but I'm skeptical that it's just a nice way of saying that I've been rejected. What are my chances of actually getting in.

Thanks

It’s too soon to tell. After May 1st, when everyone has made their decisions about either accepting a place on the waitlist or accepting a spot in the first year class there will be more information. The waitlist is set up to reflect potential needs for each school of UVA and with regard to OOS/IS numbers. If a lot of accepted students take their spot, then there will subsequently be fewer waitlisted students who are accepted.

Unfortunately, since May 1st is usually the acceptance deadline for most schools, you will likely need to place a deposit somewhere else. If UVA is your top choice, send in any additional info/recs. that might help show what you’ve done since December and be prepared to wait. Then, if you do get called from the wait-list, then you’ll just have to withdraw your name/spot at the other school.

^Thanks, that’s really helpful.

But, what do you mean with regards to OOS and international students? As an international, am I more likely to get off the waitlist?

Wait lists can be a ‘thanks but no thanks’, or they can mean that there were more admissible students then spots.

For the ‘official’ word on wait lists at UVa Dean J’s blog ‘Notes from Peabody’ covers this. When looking for information it’s best to go straight to the source. Many people will take take their own individual experiences to make a judgement on what the ‘norm’ is. That’s not always the case.

Good luck!

btw, I agree with wahoogrl08. Look at the blog. Post a question if you are still unsure. Dean J is very good at answering these.

IS–> In-state! Sorry for the confusion. I think as an international, you probably get lumped into the Out-of-state group, but I could be wrong.

eugh… geuss I’ll have to wait another month… thanks for the help!

The UK application is so much simpler and easier.
