Hey everyone, and I am a fellow Penn ed deferree. I just got waitlisted from Wash U and was actually pretty surprised because the the 4-5 kids they took from my school had lower credentials for the most part than I do. I also got into Rice ID, Michigan Honors, and NYU Arts/Sciences today (likely letter). Therefore, my question is that by getting waitlisted from Wash U, does it mean I am not competitive for Penn. I know that Wash U has a tendency to waitlist really qualified kids for the fear they will not attend, and I hope I am one of them.

Chalk it up to Tuft's syndrom and don't let it worry you.

Same thing here. The one kid who did get into Wash U visited their campus and had an interview and all. I guess you do have to show you really want to go there.

I know I've asked this before, I just dont' remember. What exactly is Tufts Syndrome? Something about rejecting highly qualified candidates b/c of not showing enough interest in the school? Correct me if I'm wrong... and why does Tufts have this label, and not other schools? Thank you!

I think every school with the exception of Harvard and Yale exhibits some sort of ways to up their yield.

Basically, Tufts is the quintessential backup school for the Ivies. Tufts has long recognized this position, and to avoid having an extremely low yield from their acceptances, Tufts is believed to reject highly qualified applicants on the basis that they expect them to go somewhere else (somewhere better).

Therefore, "Tufts Syndrome" is when extremely well-qualified applicants are rejected by schools that they statistically should have been easily accepted to because the school recognized that they would probably not attend. In this case, Dog87 is hoping that Washington University just waitlisted him because he was overqualified.

possible, but if you made the visit and had an interview, then i wouldnt get your hopes up, my gc said, "if you dont get your ass out there, there's no way you're getting in." Well i went, had an interview, and two months later, i got accepted.

I would not be concerned by a "waitlist" from WashU. It's meaningless. Penn won't punish you for being smart. In my d's school, as in so many others, among the RD applicants who did not apply for a scholarship, the best candidates( all around) were waitlisted. This is from a top public school. It is outrageous. They will just lose out on some top students who may have ended up there. Too bad for them. Sometimes my d and I share the same code on cc, so don't be confused. This is Dotty M.

I just got waitlisted from Wash U, along with many other over-qualified candidates form my school. The only two people who got in is a girl with family connections and a guy who's slightly below average in terms of wash u stats.

I wouldn't worry about wash u too much, though I know the feeling..

Hey Dog87 I am in the exact same position as you are. I think it is pretty reasonable for wustl to do this. I suppose they can tell who really wants it and who doesn't really. Is there a straight "rejection" letter for wustl, rather than waitlist?

However, do you think it might have something to do with Olin being a relatively more competitive school to get into compared to wustl's other schools?

I am in the same position. No one from my school got in, and all were pretty qualified. I didn't visit and didn't have an interview, I think that's why I am waitlisted, at least I hope that's why I am waitlisted.

Hey all fellow Penn deferrees or hopefuls, lets just hope we make it into Penn and we can forget about Wash U lol.

shit. Seems like everyone got waitlisted at Wash. U.

my friend got into harvard early and was waitlisted at wustl so dont worry its not ur stats =P

hah, just goes to show that washu's admin office is shifty

Hahah. I'm picturing a weird little bald man, huddled in a corner with a crafty grin on his face, twitching and furtively glancing from side to side.

WUSTL admissions director?

Wow...I got waitlisted at WashU too and was pretty disappointed. I thought I had a good chance too since the people they took from my school had lower stats and less EC's. If you don't mind my asking...can those of you who got waitlisted list your stats?

one of the, if not most, qualified academic applicants (1600/800/800/780/750/740, 3.92UW, 10APs, amazing recs) from my school was waitlisted, while somebody with much lower stats was admitted. on the same token, i with a 1550/800/790/750/750/3.7UW/10APs was accepted into penn, so there's definitely hope!

i dunno, i feel kinda discouraged,
Like Dog87 I was accepted to Rice ID, waitlisted to Wash.U. and am waiting for my Penn RD decision on the 1st.

My friend got into Wash U - top 1-2% of class, 1400, 690 SAT II average. He also applied to Penn. He's curious - How much of a shot does he have RD?
