Waitlisted at WUSTL...do I even stand a chance anywhere else?

I thought I'd get in. It wasn't a safety, but it wasn't a significant reach either. Now I'm doubting I have a chance to get into Stanford, Cornell, Columbia, or Princeton. It blows. Now I'm prepared for rejection everywhere else because I definitely thought I was qualified for WUSTL. I had the grades, the ECs, the GPA, the SATs, and the rank. Anyone have any advice or stories to offer/comfort me?

my D is in the same boat …:(

Same here, exactly. I bet we both were definitely qualified yet it didn’t come through.

I feel like there might have been something miserably wrong with my app or something. Definitely feels like I’m not getting in anywhere now…especially when I thought I would get in WUSTL… :(

same here…I’m just considering sending my enrollment deposit to my state school right now…

I’m in the same situation. I thought WUSTL was a pretty sure thing. But waitlisted=not.a.sure.thing! I’m just so unsure of everything now.

The thing is WUSTL is a great school…but with a 22ish% acceptance rate which is really frustrating, especially knowing that (some of) the others are less than half that, so it feels like a lost hope

I really hope I only got waitlisted b/c I didn’t interview…I seriously didn’t think working so hard for 4 years only to be waitlisted would make me feel this low, even if it’s not rejection

If your grades are very good, WASHU will waitlist you believing that you will not be heading off to St. Louis, but rather to an Ivy, Stanford, MIT, CIT or Northwestern. The school needs to raise it defer/reject ratio (making it a “selective school”)

The only consolation I have is that I didn’t interview either… especially since I never really considered going here (that sounds really bad but w/e…). But it just makes it so much worse to think I was waitlisted by a semi-match school. Particularly when I drove out there TWICE to visit campus once I found out they like interest.

Hope it’s true that some people get into Harvard and get waitlisted at WUSTL.

See, but I’m definitely not for sure getting into any Ivy’s…I’m secretly hoping they all conspired and decided to let me into my top choice and just rejected/waitlisted me for all the others…haha.

So top 1% at fairly competetive private W4.6+ GPA, 2200 SAT might be the reason I got waitlisted?

Don’t lose hope. Competition at all the top schools these days is going to be tough. Think about it: You were in a pool of 22,000+ applicants, so for anyone it is far from a guarantee that they will be admitted.
I know about people who have been accepted to WashU but not accepted into Brown; people who have been accepted to Cornell but not into WashU. I have a friend who was accepted into Duke but not WashU, and another who was accepted to Stanford but not WashU. There are just so many acceptance results for different students.

A mythbuster, however: I had a 2500+ SATI, 4.4+ weighted GPA at a top 5 high school in California, great extracurriculars, with a few national awards, and I was admitted to WashU. I did not visit at the time, but was luckily invited to Multicultural Weekend.

So the point is, great stats is not always a guarantee of admittance. At the same time, great stats means you do have a chance at all the top schools.

Best of luck!

I AM IN THE EXACT SAME SITUATION!!! And it’s killing me and my self-esteem. I hope there’s something I can do…

3.95 uw and 35 act classrank 1% of 550 got my D in waitlist :(

zenith602: SAT1 2500+???
SAT1 is 2400 Max, did you mean 2300+?

DS was waitlisted, but I’m happy it’s not an outright rejection.
Although his SAT1 was 2290, his GPA put him at about 15% class rank, and WUSTL admits 96% from the top ten percent. We knew it was a reach.

Hi AVHSDad

Sorry! I meant 2250+ . Bad typo on my part. If I got a 2500 I should probably write the next SATI exam!

Best of luck to your son. It seems like he has great stats, and I’m sure he has heavy envelopes coming from other great colleges he’s applying to!

I have a 2370 SAT, 4.0 UW, and I’m a valedictorian. Good ECs and everything else. I was waitlisted. Go figure?

Well, technically the 22% acceptance rate includes the ED rate as well, so in fact the real RD acceptance rate is much lower.

Don’t worry, you’ll all end up somewhere and you will end up loving it after four years (hopefully).

There are so many other great schools out there, don’t let one rejection/waitlist get you down.

My son was waitlisted by the way - we thought it was a good match and that he would get in. Surprised but he has other good options.

I’m in the same situation. I felt acceptance to WashU was a strong possibility, but I was waitlisted. Now I’m really scared I won’t get in anywhere else
