Waitlisted at WUSTL...do I even stand a chance anywhere else?

Yes, guys it must be true that they wait list people who have chances of getting into IVY league. So don’t lose hope…the best is yet to come!!

Son got deferred from GTech and got accepted at WUSTL and UT Austin. It is a huge surprise and when I read your stats I firmly believe the above is true. So, Hang in there and you will get even better surprises!!! Good Luck!! You all have worked hard and done well.

I got into WashU and now I’m starting to get worried about ivies… my stats are mid-range for ivy acceptances, with the exception of stellar refs and ECs coupled with a mediocre class rank.
Do I have a reason to worry?

To futurephysician:

First, congrats on your acceptance! Second, in response to your question:

"What do you think? If you got into WashU, you must be pretty smart, so I’m sure you can come to the conclusion that just because you got accepted into WashU doesn’t mean you won’t or will be accepted into other schools. Here, I will pretend to be a test prep book and write the concept in bold for you:

**If you are accepted into Washington University in St. Louis, you might or might not be accepted to other prestigious universities. Acceptance decisions from Washington University is mutually exclusive from other college decisions. In reality, you will probably have a decent shot at other top schools if you have the credentials to get into WashU. **

Okay, so for example, I applied to WashU and Cornell and got into both. I know people who got into Ivies but not WashU, WashU but not Ivies, etc. In my circle of acquaintances, I know at least six people at WashU who also got accepted into Brown, Cornell, and Dartmouth.

Congratulations on your acceptance into Washington University in St. Louis. Seriously, they get 22,000+ applications a year and have more National Merit Scholars than the majority of the Ivy League. This means you are on par with some of the best students in the nation, with credentials to apply and be accepted at the top schools. Take a deep breath and pat yourself on the back. Then go celebrate! "

Also, judging from your screen name, you probably applied premed? If you got into WUSTL’s premed program, you are definitely qualified to apply to other top schools.
I don’t see why you would choose WashU’s premed program over any other college’s, though. WashU is very famous for its premed program.

You never know with colleges. WUSTL is a good enough school that they would have more than enough top students to fill their classes. So that does not mean that you aren’t good enough for other top schools, it’s just that above a certain point, it’s a little random about who gets in and who doesn’t. An Ivy or top LAC might be looking for someone exactly like you.

Zenith- thanks for the awesome reply.
And no, I got rejected to their premed program, sadly :frowning:
Still, I got into the regular program but I forgot to fill in my FA form so I didn’t get FA so it will be hard to be able to go.
I am hoping for the ivies…

My best friend got into Duke(attending), Carnegie Mellon, Johns Hopkins, Northwestern, UMich, and UVa, and yet he still got waitlisted by WUSTL. I don’t know why they’re doing it that way, but we must take into consideration that they need to protect their yield. However, I am very sure that a lot of the people they waitlisted (even those with great stats etc.) would love to go to WUSTL… So that’s something they need to put into perspective, I guess.

Hmm I know alot of people are saying that wustl doesn’t waitlist people because they are too “overqualified”…However, I know one of my acquaintances that got accepted with 2100 SAT with around 3~4 AP classes. He joined no clubs whatsoever…BUT he did visit the campus and “showed” interest. I’m not sure anymore if this atleast justifies my waitlist status :P

A few people get it on this board. The school doesn’t gain anything by admitting a ton of qualified applicants only to see them attend college somewhere else. By putting you on the waitlist, they get to find out your real interest and lose the people who want to say they got in but don’t want to go there.

It is a good sign if you get waitlisted to washington because it means they want you but need to be sure that you want them. They have not accepted enough students to fill their freshman class.

This is a really really good school that doesn’t need to settle for people who wanted to go somewhere else.

A waitlist to Harvard or Yale is different. It might as well be a no since most of the applicants who get a yes will go there. They don’t have to use their waitlist to figure out who’s for real.

I was waitlisted too. I don’t think my stats are as good as everyone else’s here, but i thought i had a good shot. After getting rejected by all of the scholarships i applied to, this waitlist thing really frustrated me. But oh well. I hope i still have a chance for stanford and harvard (hopefully they’ll make a big error and accidentally let me in :D).

i got waitlisted at wustl and pretty much just thought “well there went all my hopes and dreams :…” but then i was looking at the credentials that some people have who have gotten in, compared them to my credentials, and couldn’t figure out how i wasn’t qualified.
i have a 34 on the ACT, and am a National Merit Scholar. I have like a 3.96 UW GPA and strong extracurriculars: (got a varsity letter in soccer my freshman year, and won state as a senior. I’m on dance company too and i’ve done a considerable amount of volunteer work, etc. etc. etc. -just like anyone else who applies to schools like wustl-)

it seems like on paper i shouldn’t have had a problem getting in, so maybe there is some credence to the thought that wustl waitlists people that they’re afraid won’t choose to go there because they don’t want to be considered a “safety school”.
well at least that’s what i’m hoping is the case so i still have a chance at some of the other reach schools i applied to.

is there any way to get OFF the waitlist? i’m not going there anyways and i just want to get Wash U off my mind completely…

@COLCOL,

Wash U can’t accept everyone who is “qualified.” I mean, your’e not going to apply to a school like Wash U if you have like really low GPA’s and test scores. Everyone stands a chance of being admitted. You’re one of 25,000 people, most of whom probably have rather high stats in all areas, are involved, good essays, etc.

What Wash U does isn’t indicative of what other schools might do! They can’t predict if you’ll get into any other college.

There are several pages in this thread (and other threads) that basically debunk the myth of “waitlisting overqualified students” or “waitlisting students who didn’t show interest.” It really makes no sense if you think about it. You’ll get into some other great colleges, maybe WL at others, maybe Rejected at others. College admissions is random to some degree, and it would be foolish if you applied to any school like Wash U with a sub-20% acceptance rate and expected to be accepted.

At the end of the day, they don’t put you into a giant computer and accept the students with the highest SAT or grades or most extracurriculars.

Hope for the best regarding the wait list… at least it means you still stand a chance of being accepted and the door isn’t closed. Maybe Wash U has a bigger wait list than other schools, but TO ME it means that you still have a chance which is better than just being flat out rejected. Good luck!!

@Lacie,

Yes – just don’t tell them you want to be on the Waitlist. Technically they offer you a spot, and you have to take action to be on it or not. If you take no action, they assume you’re not interested and you move on, and they move on. Leave the spot for someone else who wants to go!!

Sorry you did not get in. My son is a frosh there now. The reason I bring this up is that the student speaker at his convocation last August also applied and did not get into WUSTL, the first time. He gave an incredible speech but what showed through most was his belief in himself. This was a young man whose brother went to WUSTL and he thought surely he would ‘legacy in’ or some such thing. He didn’t and went somewhere else for two years. But he know WUSTL is a great institution and he still wanted to be part of it. I know not getting in hurts; I have been there myself. But please, do not let such an impersonal process define who you are. Be kind to yourself, be patient, and good things will surely commence. Best wishes.

I got into Stanford and I got waitlisted at WashU. Not to be pretentious, but WashU was a safety-esque school in that I would like to go there, and I didn’t think it was that competitive admissions but I do know that they really emphasize interest. They dont want it to be filled with the Ivy Rejects so I’ve heard they waitlist a lot of “top candidates”

WashU might waitlist the strongest applicants to maintain a high matriculation rate, but why do they are merit scholarships?

They give out full/half rides, plus a bunch of other denominations or scholarships, for a reason! If they think you will prefer HYPSM, they will give you MONEY not a rejection letter.

That’s just my opinion though.

i was shocked to get in

96.379 w gpa
top 20% of class (school ranks in 10% sections) in one of the most competitive high schools in the country
SICK ecs
good essay
good recs
2150 sat (1450)
33 act

and they gave me an entrepreneurial scholarship, along with some other money :)

Guys, don’t have your hopes up. Take waitlisted as a rejection. The acceptance rate of waitlisted candidates are so low that it’s not worth having any hope. I’m waitlisted too, and I’m moving on. Come on guys…

If you feel like moving on then DON"T click to stay on the waitlist. Just move on to what your second or third choice is, so that the people who really, really want to be at Wash actually have a chance.
