waitlisted but bad senior grades

So I was waitlisted at Cornell and am doing all I can to get off it (LOCI, extra rec, etc.). However, my 3rd quarter grades are worse than my midterm report, so it won’t do me any good to send them in. Am I at a disadvantage if I don’t send in my grades? Can I just have my counselor address in a letter that I am in “good academic standing” and leave it at that?

Is there anyone in the past who didn’t send grades but are accepted off waitlist?

if you are asked to send 3rd qtr grades by your WL school, you HAVE to send them.

If they asked for third quarter grades you need to send them to remain in consideration.

Do you know the latest notification date for waitlist decision? Some schools don’t even notify until the end of July so you’d have to send in your final transcripts but with 4th quarter, you have a chance to bring up grades.

This is what they say regarding additional materials:

“We are particularly interested in receiving new grade reports, information about new honors or awards, and updates on your activities. Of course, we would welcome any other information, too.”

It doesn’t sound like they are requiring grades, but will I be at an extreme disadvantage if I don’t send any? I got A’s and 1 B+ in all AP classes for mid-year, and given the rigor of my school, I can only go down from there. Especially when I didn’t have the incentive between midyear and when decisions came out to put in substantial effort to keep my grades tippy top. Besides, I spent a lot of time during those months finding and interviewing for a research position over the summer, which I am planning to address in my LOCI.

Any thoughts?

What is your definition of “worse” since your midterms were strong (one B+ in an AP course is just fine). Were you selected for the summer research position? I do think if the school is telling you they are “particularly interested in receiving new grades”, it would look suspicious to not include them with your LOCI.

@momofsenior1 Worse as in my grades in 3 classes dropped an entire letter grade and I now have a C+ in the B+ class. i got the research position, i am actually working in it over the weekends. I also got additional hours in my regular job because I didn’t think I would actively pursue a waitlist a few months ago, but now that it is this particular school I got wait listed from, I think it is worth it. Plus, I needed the additional money for college. This job took a lot of time from my weekdays to study and I would just come home exhausted. I might ask my employer to write a letter of recommendation to show that I had dedicated more time to the job and that I wasn’t just slacking off.

So I was waitlisted at a top school and am doing all I can to get off it (LOCI, extra rec, etc.). However, my 3rd quarter grades are worse than my midterm report, so it won’t do me any good to send them in. Am I at a disadvantage if I don’t send in my grades? Can I just have my counselor address in a letter that I am in “good academic standing” and leave it at that?

I’d be interested in knowing if there is anyone who was waitlisted at a top school, didn’t send grades for whatever reason, and still ended up getting off.

Keep in mind that I was waitlisted at a top school, so I am really hesitant to send bad grades because top schools look for every little excuse to not enroll you. Plus, I am not hooked in any way.

OK, so not great but salvageable! How does your school report grade on your official transcript? Is it by quarter or by semester? My daughter’s school sends quarterly reports to parents but only semester grades to colleges. If that’s the case, send in your LOCI highlighting your paid research position (super cool btw that it is paid) and that you will send your transcript at the end of the school year. That gives you the final quarter to get your grades back up.

As an aside, coming off the wait list is a long shot at best so I hope you have another option that you are excited about!

@momofsenior1 My school sends final grades only, so quarter grades and midterm grades are not seen, with the exception of senior mid-year reports as each quarter and midterm grades are reported separately. Hopefully, they will only show final grades for senior year as well. I will work my a** off 4th quarter lol and hope that waitlist admissions are not over the third week of June, which is when my school ends. Thank you for your replies!
