Waitlisted Class of 2017

Hi everyone!
I was just waitlisted for the class of 2017 at Dartmouth. I was really hoping to go there, and was wondering if anyone heard anything about the Dartmouth waitlist in particular or what college admissions officers want. I've seen a lot of mixed messages on the internet about wooing college admissions officers to get off the waitlist.

Thanks, and good luck everyone! Congrats to everyone that was accepted!

I also got waitlisted. I accepted my place on the waitlist and am going to send in a letter with an update on my accomplishments and maybe another recommendation. Beyond that, I’d be interested to hear what other advice veteran CC’ers have.

I was also waitlisted. Does anyone know if the admissions office reviews every single waitlisted student’s application when trying to fill open spots?

My D went from deferred to accepted a few years ago, so not exactly waitlisted, but the chances were still small. I’m not an expert, but in addition to updating them on any accomplishments, maybe write a letter about how you will contribute to the DM community (not just why you want to go there, but how they will benefit from having you there, if you get my drift). I would let them know it is your #1 choice (if it is) and that you will 100% go if offered a spot (I know some people disagree with me on this one, but I think it is beneficial). Also, if you can have your high school counselor call your admissions officer, it might help too (not today, let things calm down first). Last, I agree with having an additional rec sent (hopefully shedding some additional info about you). By being on the waitlist, DM already has acknowledged that have all the academic qualifications and they would like you, if they can find the room. The key is getting picked from all of the waitlisted applicants. I have no knowledge of how they choose from the pool, but doing all of this did help my D go from deferred to accepted. Good luck, and I hope you all are happy with your other choices.

Hey guys! waitlisted here as well.
I am not sure how it works for internationals, but I am sure the percentage is so small.
Waitlists are not for sissies (I found that in another cc post) so let’s keep up our hopes!

Hiya, I also got waitlisted. Has anyone here heard from Dartmouth? When does the admission officers usually decide if they are going to use their waitlist?

waitlist decisions won’t come until after they process the yield of “I’m coming” from accepted students.

Hi! I also got waitlisted!

Has anyone heard from the waitlist yet??

bump! Has anyone heard from the waitlist yet?

Anyone heard? Anyone have any idea when we will start to hear?

Last year, the acceptances off the wait list started about May 9 and “officially” closed about July 1. Take a deep breath. Let it out. Relax. Good luck.

Looks like they will be taking around 50 students: [TheDartmouth.com: Yield sees marginal drop to 48.5 percent](http://thedartmouth.com/2013/05/06/news/yield)

They will gradually make offers in order to achieve the desired class size of 1120-1125, so once they get 27-32 acceptances off the wait list, that’s it. They may have to make 50 offers to get to that number, but they will not be “taking” 50 students. I hope I explained that right.

^I thought colleges are pretty good at making the yield for waitlist close to 100%? no?

Hola! Just checked the D portal and noticed that my financial aid documents state “reviewed and satisfied”. But what was really interesting is that many were dated today, May 8, 2013. I hadn’t checked it before today so I don’t have anything to compare it to. I think as of March 28 they were noted “in progress”. Do you think this is a good sign? Are you guys seeing the same thing? Any thoughts you have would be appreciated…

Lovenerds, I agree. I think that’s part of what I was trying to say. One of the reasons the wait list acceptance process lasts so long is that the school will not “over accept” the way it does in the first round. Offer as many positions as you want to fill. See what you get. Offer what you have left, and so on. My reference to 50 was based on the article in the D, which referred to 40 to 50, but the numbers suggest they only need 27 to 32 to meet the desired class size. Maybe add in a few for people whose plans change at the last minute, and the difference is pretty small. :)

when i said “taking” I meant extending an offer of admission. as a WL applicant that would accept, the number of offers is what most interests me  Sorry for the confusion! Did anyone hear anything today? i have a friend that got in off the WL to duke today

Congrats to your friend, preetsv! Good luck with Dartmouth.

Thanks! This wait list stuff is throwing me for a loop! I was prepared for a rejection back in march but to be doing this now is anxiety producing :). I sent an update, a handwritten note with a photograph related to my common app essay, and a rec. any tips or advice? Should I call or write again?

^^ I think you’ve done what you can. There was a similar thread last year that you can look for, but the bottom line is that the college will let you know in its own good time, and there’s nothing you can do to advance the process. At this point, the discussion in the admissions office could be, “Dang. We didn’t get the squash player. Shall we pick that dancer with the rec’s or the debater with the GPA?” Best wishes.
