Waitlisted Classes

I have waitlisted for Writing 37 and my waitlist position is 1. Does being the first to waitlist almost guarantee my chances of getting in ? I waitlisted for Andreasan btw. Is he an easy teacher?

nothing ever guarantees your chances, but being #1 you have a really really high chance. but writing does have a limited number of people. you’ll know the 17th or something, the day before they open enrollment to everyone/drop waitlists. you can check websoc and see that day if there’s an empty spot in the enrolled amount - it’ll mean someone got dropped since they forgot to pay fees.

that’s his rating there. seems like he’s fun but not easy.

I thought it would be a guarentee since that class has about three empty seats and I am the only one waitlisted. I guess I can only hope…

Thanks for the list, it really helped. I wish someone would rate Professor Hesketh or Hernandez since they do not have any ratings.

Well that depends on why there are empty seats in the first place. It’s possible they are reserved for some reason. If not, yes you have a super high chance of getting in.

Yeah, not all professors will be rated and that is usually because they are fairly new or not necessarily professors (for ex, TA’s or graduate students who are teaching the class, which is very common for Writing).

To the OP, its definitely not guaranteed, but you have a high chance of getting in because depending on your teacher, if someone misses the first day, then you take their spot. Or if anything, they will just add you.

Junshik : so even if no one drops the class, the professor can still add me if he wants to ?

Its definitely possible for lecture classes; however since yours is a writing class, its 50/50 since the instructors are still graduate students and they might not have much leeway in terms of class size.

Don’t count on it though!

i don’t get what you mean by there’s still seats avail. were u talking about the actually classroom itself? there may be an even higher possibility of you getting in then, but that’s by talking to the prof, like what junshik says.
i don’t exactly know how things work now either… with ‘online petitions’. add/drop cards were pretty easy to get most profs to sign.

don’t they get rid of the electronic waitlists for writing classes? at least, they did when i took writing 39c last quarter. it just depended on who signed the waitlist on the first day of class. i think they go off by that. then again, i can totally be wrong! :S

Yeah I just noticed that they will deactivate waitlists for wrtitng 37 and 39b by sept 22nd  I am so confused about this waitlisting process…

well if you’re gonna get in it’s most likely after enrollment re-opens. there’s a period (sept 15- noon of 18th) where webreg is unavailable. the people who don’t pay their uci fees get dropped from their classes, i believe this is where you get in/take the spot of someone who didn’t pay. – someone correct me if i’m wrong.
they deactivate waitlists by the 22nd b/c it generally didn’t matter what waitlist spot you were if you wanted the teacher to sign an add card on the first day. most of the time it’s by like seniority etc.
if you don’t get in by the 18th you’ll prob have to go to the class on the first day (a little early) to talk to the professor about adding it. or you can shoot him an email before school starts.

the only problem is that they are not using add/drop cards, but i did email the professor.

I know they’re not using add/drop cards. As I said, I know they use online petitions now which I personally don’t have experience using, so I’m not sure of the process. It could be similar to add/drop cards just now the professor electronically says yes or no, or it could be something the school administration does, I’m not sure. but either way, it still applies that the waitlist isn’t necessary after the 22nd because it’s whether or not you get accepted by however Online Petition works.
& I meant to say email the professor post-the 18th, because if you get in by then there’s no point in the email, but oh well.
