Waitlisted/Denied?

I don’t think I’ll be staying on the waitlist either. My parents would rather have me be closer (WUSTL is approx 2.5 hour plane ride, vs. 5 hrs to Chicago and apparently there are no direct flights? according to my parents but I find that odd) and I have family members attending my only other far school, Tulane.

I got waitlisted, and I’m kind of surprised I wasn’t accepted. I guess it makes sense though, since I had almost no real interest in Northwestern (probably showed in my essays). But it doesnt matter at all, I have a full ride at UCSD.

When I visited NU, the adcom said specifically that the Northwestern Statement was the “make or break” part of the application, for her anyway. She said that they see way too many fantastically qualified people, and demonstrated interest was a quick way to separate them out from each other. So for those with strong stats who were waitlisted/rejected but didn’t want to go to Northwestern that badly anyway, I’m sure that many of you will still get offers from top schools (and hopefully the ones that you want the most!). Best of luck.

Rejected and somewhat surprised. Maybe it was my devastating good looks? It would throw off the balance at NU.

Accepted:
UCB
UCLA
UCSD
UCSB
USC
UMiami

Waitlist:
Wash.U

Deferred & Pending:
Stanford

Pending:
Many others

Rejected:
Northwestern

…thanks for taking away all of my hope Northwestern.

Denied and somewhat surprised too. Was expecting a wait list. I think my NU statement was pretty strong, and this rejection is even worse cause now I don’t know what to expect from the rest of my schools! Hmm. I guess we’ll gave to wait and watch

I can completely relate!

waitlisted, little surprised but somehow, not totally devastated - i think that some good school will eventually work out for me. i think northwestern (like every other school this year) was weird with applications - supremely qualified people got rejected / waitlisted, while less qualified people got in. i think with the volume of applications and the randomness, college admissions is becoming near impossible

in any case, here are my schools—
Accepted:
Babson

Waiting On:
Harvard, Yale, Penn, Dartmouth, Johns Hopkins, Georgetown, Tufts, NYU-Stern, Boston College, George Washington

Waitlisted:
Northwestern

Rejected:
Columbia (ED)

Deferred:
Michigan (EA) - still waiting…

hopefully something pans out!!!

Rejected and really bummed out. I had a lot of demonstrated interest, high stats and idk I guess I kinda expected to get in but whatevz I guess :(.

Accepted
UMich
UCBerkeley
UCLA
UC San Diego
UCDavis
UCIrvine

Waitlisted
WUSTL

Rejected
Northwestern :(

waitlisted…didn’t think I was going to get in at all. not sure what to do now I guess…

I find it highly offensive to say that “less qualified people” got in. Don’t make such rash statements and bash others just because you’re sad you got waitlisted. I understand you’re sad, but no need to say that less qualified people, than you, got in because that’s a horrible attitude to have. I understand wait listing sucks because I got WL at washu, but seriously, don’t be rude.

Rejected – not surprised per se, but disappointed. I love love love NU and I made it clear in my essay, I had a good interview, and I had a tremendous grade trend. I think my GPA was the killer – I had a pretty bad sophomore year and even a huge upswing couldn’t make my GPA more than mediocre for a school like this. Many better than I were rejected as well, so I can’t get too down.

I know everyone tries to make you feel better when you get rejected, but the one thing that has actually made me feel better is this quote, I forget where it’s from: “It’s not your fault you got rejected, it’s our fault for not building a bigger college.” It’s small consolation, but I really believe this is true.

Accepted:
Boston College (EA)
University of Massachusetts Amherst (EA)

Rejected:
University of Chicago (Deferred EA)
Northwestern University

Pending:
Tufts University
William and Mary
Carnegie Mellon University
Stanford University
University of Rochester

Obviously if Northwestern admitted someone over you, they liked them better. Who knows why. The way I see it - if a school doesn’t want me then I don’t want them!

Accepted:
USC
Vanderbilt
UMich
BC

Waitlist:
Northwestern

Denied:
UCLA
UCB :frowning: <– childhood dreams crushed.

Rejected. I applied to Medill and I’ve heard that their acceptance rate is lower than other schools at NU. I knew it was a reach but I had renewed hope when I got accepted to Berkeley and UCLA, which was a bit of a pleasant surprise. Of course, Northwestern was my dream school but I can’t really go wrong with UCB and UCLA as my options.

Rejected… really disappointed
Northwestern was more of a target school than a reach one
oh well…

Accepted: USC, UCLA, Berkeley
Waiting on other ivy leagues and NYU

Rejected, not surprised because, well hey, college applications are college applications.

Rejected: NU
Accepted: U.Chicago, UCB (regents), UCLA, UCSD, UCD, UCI, USC, Washington St. Louis.
Likelies: Duke + UPenn
Waiting on: Ivies + JHU + CMU + Emory + Stanford

In the end, we shouldn’t blame anyone, not even ourselves.

Rejected: Northwestern

Accepted: WashU, U of Washington
Likely: UPenn, Dartmouth, Columbia
Waitlist: Rice

Waiting on: Some other ivies, Duke, JHU, Vandy

MUST BLAME SOMEONE THOUGH ;)

College admissions is way too sporadic. I got into UC Berkeley but got waitlisted by NW. Waiting on the entire Ivy league, Stanford, NYU, and Duke. Keeping my hopes up.

I’m seeing an awful lot of situations where students are getting likely letters from reach schools with very low acceptance rates, and then getting rejected or waitlisted from schools that appeared to be good matches. This total uncertainty is only going to force future applicants to submit even more applications to cover their behinds – and lower acceptance yields for colleges across the board.

Keep your hope up, folks – one or two schools may surprise you the wrong way, but it usually doesn’t affect your chances at the next school, even if their acceptance rates are lower.

^ I’m one exception. I haven’t gotten any likely letter and I’m being waitlisted by schools that I had previously (and falsely) considered matches.

My current situation:

Accepted to: None

Waitlisted at: WUSTL, Northwestern

Rejected by: Penn Wharton (ED), and if the rumor was real, then I got rejected by Pomona as well.

24,000+ people were rejected/waitlisted this evening by Northwestern, so don’t feel alone - as you can see by these posts you are likely in very good company.
