My son applied for CS as 1st major and Math as 2nd major, applied as EA, got deferred to RD but eventually got waitlisted specifically for CS alone, thats what the letter says. His friends with similar to slightly better stats also didn’t get CS but got DS as they had selected that as second choice. His credentials are good, got 790 on SAT Math, got As in Math and AP Math. It seemed odd he didn’t get Math but specifically got waitlisted for CS.
Is waitlisted for 1st major better or getting second major choice which seems like denied 1st major ?
What are the chances of getting called from waitlist for CS ?
Purdue got almost 8,000 applications for just 450 computer science seats for incoming freshmen in Fall 2022. Purdue will let students switch majors, but only on a “space available” basis. They make no guarantees a space will open up or that you would be first on the list if one does. They specifically stated that if you 100% want CS and got a direct admit elsewhere - take the direct admit elsewhere. For those a little more on the fence, they are opening up a new Artificial Intelligence major in the fall, which sounds like it would be somewhat similar to CS. Your son would have to research and see if that is something that might interest him. Their Data Science major has some overlap with CS (the first year of classes is mostly the same) but would involve more statistics classes. Both of those will be in the CS department in the College of Science, meaning that a CS minor might be possible with either an AI or DS major, even if one can’t actually get a CS major.
