I'm a freshman applicant and was waitlisted for the college of Letters and Sciences. I accepted the waitlist, as UCSB is my first choice school, but does anyone know if I'll find out sooner than May 1st? Should I appeal? What are my chances on getting in? If it helps my stats are a 3.9 cumulative gpa and an 1820 on the SAT. I've taken 5 APs and got a 4 on my AP Lang + Comp test, and a 3 on my US history test. I work part time, 15 hrs/week, and am ASB vice president this year, in addition to holding numerous leadership positions in the past. My essays were solid. Thank you in advance and congrats to everyone that was accepted! :D

Thank you for confirming your desire to be on the UC Santa Barbara waitlist for Fall 2012. After May 1, we will know whether more spaces are available and whether more applicants can be admitted.

We plan to make all decisions about applicants who are on the waitlist by May 31. An email will alert you that the decision is available on this website. Applicants who receive an offer of admission will be sent a letter via U.S. Mail and will have one week to submit a Statement of Intent to Register (SIR).

Answers to some of your questions about the waitlist are available in our Waitlist FAQ’s.

If a space in the UCSB freshman class for Fall 2012 does not become available and attending UC Santa Barbara is still your goal, please consider applying for transfer admission as a junior. To learn more about transferring to UCSB, please read about our transfer selection process.

Again, thank you for your interest in UC Santa Barbara. We wish you every success in achieving your educational goals.

Sincerely,

Christine N. Van Gieson
Director of Admissions

It would not hurt for you to contact admissions, but it seems they are clear on the situation. You are not rejected therefore there is no appeals process. You can hear anytime between May 1 and May 31. Hang tight and select another university that you like best. That’s what my son is going to do.

Hm, would becoming a member of the National Honor Society be enough basis for an appeal? I don’t know when we will hear back about those, I just submitted my application for NHS. Other than that I don’t think I have any other “new or compelling evidence”. And yes I think I will submit my SIR to SDSU, and just keep my fingers crossed for SB.

What do you guys think are the chances of getting in through the wait list? I really wanted to attend UCSB and I just found out I was wait listed. :/

Hard to say. Although last year they didn’t accept anyone from the waitlist, during my year (2010 admissions) I heard everyone who was on the waitlist got in. In fact I have ~10 friends who got in through the waitlist, and that is just me. Don’t lose hope, but really it is hard to tell.

@mgmtlol If you look on the thread about the official decisions for class of 2016, someone posted that most waitlist students were accepted in 2010 so Fendi was right. Hopefully that will be true for us as well!

I don’t understand the decisions this year… I feel I am extremely well qualified to go to UCSB and I was waitlisted. Every thread I posted in people were telling me that I was nearly a shoe-in. I know that the people on cc aren’t exactly gurus, but still, I just don’t get it.

I have very similar stats to you… I thought I for sure was going to be accepted, I have been pretty dissappointed the past few days.

We can only hope for the best. Must wait until May1st… I think I will send an appeal letter also, just so they can have more information about me. The more, the merrier.

@Alamedaandre what major did you get wait listed for? And what were your stats, if you don’t mind me asking I don’t understand the decisions this year either. I’ve had several friends get in, and their test scores and GPAs are low low low.

@calimali I’m going to do the same. I might have reported my GPA as 3.86 instead of 3.9 as I think factored in freshman year…the C I got in PE certainly did not help haha. I’m also going to call the admissions office later this week once the craziness has died down and see what the chances of people who were wait listed getting in this year are. The past couple of weeks have been very disappointing, I really though UCSB would be the one. Being wait listed is better than being rejected, however I hate being in this limbo.

I just SIR’ed a no to UCSB, so hopefully one of you will get my place. I included a letter telling them to actually read the applications instead of admitting people based on numbers like they must have done for me… then sent me to a field of study I had no interest in and clearly wouldn’t have enrolled for.

Maybe they felt that I would be mildly disappointed, but I just felt terrible that my offer wasn’t given to one of you fine folk.

(@megank, my spot was for L&S. hope you get it!)

I got wait listed too! GPA 3.86 and got a 4.6 last semester bringing it up to a 3.93 i believe. ACT: 28 and a lot of ECA’s, varsity surf captain for 4 years… if anyone finds out any info on this years wait list please post it here!! UCSB is my #1 and I want it so bad just like all of you! Goodluck to everyone that is wait listed… hopefully the turn out is like how it was in 2010

Would getting a 4.6 last semester be a good enough reason to appeal? I have never heard of doing this before and don’t really know what a “good” reason is! Any help would be good thanks everyone
