The class for math1b is not full, it's just all the discussions are. I'm 34 on the waitlist, so I probably won't be able to get that class. Can I just take Math53 and then make up Math1B in the summer (in a CC)? I took calc bc last year, but scored a 4 on the test.

Sounds like a good idea. 53 is really all about new material anyway, so I don't think you'd really be behind anyone in terms of material.

Math 53 is even more full. Sorry. :-)

Also keep in mind that extra discussion sections are often opened up if there's still plenty of room in the lecture but not enough room in the sections.

yes, 53 is not actually as full as it looks--the enrollment situation looked pretty similar at this time last year, but pretty much everyone who was persistent got in (there were about 500 kids in Hutchings by the end of the fall 2007 semester, and I would expect something similar now).

Actually, after knowing I'm waitlisted for Math1B, I immediately signed up for Math53 as a backup. So I'm basically in that class right now, it's just a matter of whether I need to drop it in case I get into 1B.

I have a question though. Isn't Math1B a prerequisite for 53? I once read in this forum that in the final phase of Telebear people who do not meet the prerequisites will be kicked out of the class, is that true?

^^ could someone answer the above question… i’m thinking of taking 1A and 53 together… and then 1b in the spring. Any opinions?

53 requires 1A-B.
Taking 53 first might not be the best idea, as it builds off 1B

Taking 1A and 53 together is also a bad idea

Question to OP and CCnewbie, what are your majors?

My majors math/eco

Actually i want to sign up for Eco 101A ASAP so i want to take 53 quickly.

I understand that 1b is a pre req for 53… but reading all the posts in this forum i get the idea that we can somehow sign up for 53 without 1b.

you shouldn’t rush into UD coursework, I would still say that you should take Math 1B first

1A and 1B are prerequisites for 53. Even though 53 only uses the basic concepts from 1A/B, such as simple differentiation and integration, they are prerequisites that can only be waived by a 5 on Calc BC, the appropriate approved 1A/B equivalents at a community college, or a signed waiver by the course instructor. Since the OP has not fulfilled any of these yet, it is possible that the instructor will drop him/her from the course. It would be wise to e-mail the instructor about your situation and request a prerequisite waiver if necessary.
CCnewbie, it’s not possible to take 53 unless you have taken both 1A and 1B or passed out of them via one of the three methods above. You could take 53 next summer, though, if timing is an issue.

All of the discussions in the 8am Math 1b lecture are open…

This thread was started last year guys…
