I got waitlisted from Michigan.
Nevertheless, I haven’t given up. I will do anything to transfer to Michigan.
I have a few questions,
Other than an excellent (3.5+) GPA at the University I attend for my freshman year, what else could I do to make my application look better?
Why did my waitlist letter ask me to transfer after TWO years of college? Can I not transfer after my freshman year?
Is it objectively easier to get into LSA than engineering or vice versa? I really don’t care what I major in, but after my experience from undergraduate admissions, I realized that taking Computer Science as a major is the worst mistake I could do. I got waitlisted and rejected from too many places where people with easier majors were accepted. What is the easiest school to get accepted to at Michigan?
What kind of courses should I take during my freshman year at my University?
Any other help would be much appreciated, I plan to get everything right from the beginning. Getting into Michigan means everything to me.
You still have chances to be accepted on the WL, Michigan said they would use the waitlist more this year.
Plus I don’t think your mindset is good. The important part is what you study, not where you study it. I don’t understand why you specifically want to go to Michigan and don’t care about the major. Unless you want to party for four years and don’t care about the study then sure.
Your intended major does not affect your admission at all, it is the school you apply to. If you apply to CoE, the chance of admission is lower just as indicated by the admission rate and stat.
@meriks Yeah my mindset does sound very screwed up.
but think about it this way, I am an International student and my family will be spending a fortune on my college education. I want my family’s money to be spent in the best possible way and hence I am going on name value over my course of study.
I genuinely enjoy computer science, but I don’t genuinely enjoy it enough to study at a second grade institution instead of studying at the University of Michigan.
@billcsho, if students can transfer in as a sophomore, then what about applying for the Winter 2016 term? Especially if you already have 10 AP courses and will be starting college at the sophomore level.
@billcsho, just trying to figure out when you can actually apply for a transfer. In some cases, I’ve seen that you need to be able to enter UM with junior standing and, in others, it looks like you can come in as a sophomore. With 10 AP’s, I would think that should be considered a sophomore. Does UM require you to have a full completed semester at another university in order to apply as a transfer?
@BSM1987 You need to transfer no later than Junior year as 60+ credits need to be taken at UMich. They also accept transfer in each term but you need to have a decent GPA from college before you apply to transfer. AP credits are not counted for GPA. My D was admitted with 33 AP credits and was still considered freshmen. Anyway, there is no strict definition for freshmen, sophomore, or junior. They will charge you upperclassmen tuition once you have accumulated 55 credits.
You can attempt to transfer after one year, if you wish. The two years is a suggestion, not a requirement. Unfortunately, admission for international students is extremely competitive as you have probably noticed. One other option is appealing your admissions decision. I would strongly suggest writing a letter to the admissions office. From what I’ve seen (I work in the office of undergraduate admissions), a considerable amount of students were rejected/wait-listed this year. With this in mind, I would expect them to take students off the waitlist. At this point, your best bet is to improve your standing on that waitlist. Best of luck to you! Hopefully you will end up in Ann Arbor!
@Miw140 I know right? Even from the top schools in my country no one got into Michigan, I was actually kind of relieved I got into the waitlist. How would you suggest I improve my standing on the waitlist?
@Osserpusser That is not rumor. You can find those info on the CDS each year under section C2. In 2013, they offered 10709 students for waitlist and 3523 students were on the waitlist. At the end, 89 of them were admitted. In 2014, 12631 were offered waitlist while 4457 were actually on the waitlist but 91 were admitted. This year they will admit a lot more from the waitlist and they may offer slightly more students to be on the waitlist.
One thing it does not show on the CDS is how many of the waitlist admitted students actually enroll. In other words, how many spots of enrollment they needed to fill when they offered admission to the waitlist gradually. Also, the spots may be school specific as they still offered admission to the waitlist when they had over-enrollment in the whole campus.
My D accepted waitlist. We would not know until end of June. How does it affect acceptance to the other school since we have to decide by May 1.
Do I accept other school and tell them it is conditional? Please advise.
