I would think that schools like to use a wait list to have more control over the makeup of their final class. For example, if more males than females accept, they have a male heavy class. The waitlist would then give the school the ability to place more females and round out their class the way they envision it. That’s how I see it.
^^ @quadaces. That’s correct. In addition, if a number of students who have professed an interest in a subject (or an EC) decline the college, Admissions can go to the waitlist looking for students who have similar qualities, allowing the university to maintain the same balance of gender/academic interest/EC interest they had when originally selecting the class. In that sense, a waitlist gives a college greater control over the final make-up of the class regardless of which student’s ultimately decline an offer. Having a waitlist is NOT just about preventing over-enrollment, which is why William Fitzsimmons regretted not being able to take anyone from the waitlist last year. He, and the rest of the Admissions office, were basically “stuck” with the mix/balance of students who accepted/declined the offer and could not fine-tune the class to institutional needs.
@Junior010 I called and also was told that the fax number is 617-496-0937. It’s possible that they have a different fax number for each region or else they have a number used specifically for receiving letters of recommendation as opposed to other supplemental materials.
Although I said my name, I never stated what area I was from (New Hampshire). So, unless they looked up my name really quick or identified the area code, they wouldn’t have known where I was from. When I return to school from April break I will check with my recommending teacher and the admissions office in order to make sure the fax went through.
Is there a deadline of sending LOCI?
@binky66 I assume May 1st, (tmo lmao), as they will look at the WL afterwards.
Has anyone gotten off the WL yet? A lot of schools have started pulling from their WLs.
.
@fairaque the waitlist reply date was may 1, so I’m assuming not
@fairaque an informed guess… no, admissions committee will start process May 2 or shortly thereafter.
They should start may 6th or so… that’s if they even take kids of the WL. I believe, you will hope to hold off until June as they start removing kids in rounds. If you’re lucky enough to get off for admission or z list deffered admission, you will receive a phone call followed by a letter of admission. The angst.
@gibby What’s your theory on the yield and WL number this year? They admitted 1962 total (964 through EA). Official fb shows 1446 members. Assuming some Z listers in there.
1443* members

Best of luck to everyone here!
Last year, Harvard was oversubscribed, so they couldn’t take anyone off the waitlist. As a result, Admissions probably took more students than usual and placed them on the Z-list for this year. So, I wouldn’t read too much into the 1443 facebook count. My guess is that unless the yield drops dramatically, Harvard will probably take 30 to 40 kids from the waitlist, but I doubt there will be room for more than that.
@gibby Do you secretly work in the Harvard admissions office?
^^ Haha. Seriously though, no I don’t.
Your Harvard Yale insignia is funny - but, I ask , as you’re on these forums a lot. May I ask why your ocupation is? Your information generally seems to be spot on.
MODERATOR’S NOTE:
@gibby has written often of his 2 kids - a daughter who graduated from Harvard and a son who graduated form Yale and has proven to be a font of knowledge about both universities. Hence the avatar. As this website is called College Confidential it’s inappropriate to ask information that has not previously be shared - like his occupation.
I called the admissions office and they confirmed that my teacher’s fax went through using the number I provided earlier.
No worries - didn’t mean to imply anything… my intentions are good.
