Waitlisted - help!

hey, so i just found out i was waitlisted at USD. i know its difficult to know what factors lead to the decisions made on my app, but i am pretty certain that what largely affected it was my midyear grade report senior year. they were AWFUL (im not being modest..) - but i was undergoing extremely unfortunate personal and health situations at the time. i failed to report this ahead of time to the office of admissions, which was just a mistake. basically:
-got bad grades 1st semester
-had legitimate reason for my poor performance
-didnt report the explanation for bad grades
-my stats, essay, and recs all were definitely above average - almost certain i would have gotten accepted if not for my horrible grades from the beginning of this year
-my grades from midterms & 2nd semester are MUCH better

does anyone have any advice for what i should do? does USD have a policy on appeals? should i send an email to the office of admissions describing my personal circumstances and ask what they would suggest?

also - does anyone know what the chances are for someone to get accepted from the waitlist? and when we might hear about it?

any info would be much appreciated!

since you are on the waitlist, your file is still open in admissions. They will be looking for NEW information from you, and certainly you have 1) an explanation for the poor grades, and 2) proof you have turned it around.

Call them and send them you mid-semester report card, and a half page description of the outside forces that influenced your grade drop. Oh, and assuming it is true, tell them explicitly that you WILL attend USD if admitted off the wait list.

DunninLA gave you good suggestions. Have your guidance counselor or a school official follo up with this and verify the severity of your personal situation.

I just got an email from their office this morning about my declining their offer of admission, so they are definitely working through this entire weekend to get things ironed out with their class for next year. I wouldn’t be surprised they start calling waitlisted people this week.
