I got wait-listed in U of Michigan Ann Arbor, and they gave me an option to respond. However, I get to know the results in May 15, which is after the official deadline of accepting the offer of US colleges (which is May 1). Can anyone tell me how the waitlisting works? I am really confused, and I have very little time to make a choice.

Also, I hear that I'm allowed to deposit at TWO colleges in US. Is that true?

This is, unfortunately, how waitlisting works. Your letter should have included instructions on how to proceed. You will need to send a deposit to your second favorite school and assume that you will be going there in the fall, but if a waitlist spot opens up and is offered to you at UMich, then you will have the option to attend instead - you will lose your deposit to the first school.

Like tmiles said: you formally accept and make a deposit at your 2nd choice school, the one that offered you a spot. Simultaneously, you accept an invitation to be on UM’s waitlist – without any knowledge if they may eventually accept you.

If they do give you an offer, then you must choose to accept that offer, knowing you’ve already got a spot waiting for you at #2. When and if the UM offer comes, you can decline it of course.

If you decide to accept UM’s offer, then you let them know as such. Subsequently, you inform school #2 of your decision not to attend. You may lose your deposit but there will be no ramifications thereafter. In fact, they’ll likely offer your spot to someone on *their *waitlist.

Your question: “do I have an option to go into another school instead of U of Mich?” is confusing. You will already be holding a spot for school #2. What other schools do you mean?
