Wait Listed at UCLA, is there any chance for Berkeley?

UCLA rejected too. So far rejection from UCSD, UCLA. Waitlisted at UC Davis… Waiting for UC Berkeley. I AM SURE I WILL BE 100% REJECTED. IF ACCEPTED, I MUST BE DREAMING!!! LOL

Stats:
SAT 2020
SAT II Physics 800 MathII 800
GPA: 3.6

A bit surprised at my rejection from UCLA. 2270 SAT and 4.15 capped UC GPA. Over 250 hours community service, over 100 hours as an intern for an assemblyman, good essays about high level of hardship (father died and mother had breast cancer freshman-soph years) and how it has shaped me into becoming the ambitious person I am today and my community service/internship/community project where I set up a system at my school to “sponsor” a student at a low income elementary school to get fresh produce. Now, I’m just discouraged and pretty sure I don’t have a shot at UCB now that I was rejected at UCLA…

dude myomoo iam sure you will get in my cousin was in the same situation and did you apply to other school besides the uc’s and plus ill pray for you because iam set and i applied there i would rather see someone like you get it than me too!

I just got waitlisted at U of Chicago. I am hoping UCB says yes!

Don’t worry about it. Last year, I got rejected from both LA and SD and am now attending Cal. I had fairly similar (perhaps even slightly worse) stats as compared to those who have posted in this thread.

For everyone in this thread: Don’t write yourselves off for Berkeley just yet. I got waitlisted from Chicago, accepted into UCSD, then flat out rejected from UCLA (not even the waitlist). Like you, I was not expecting to get into Berkeley at all, and my mind was blown when I logged into my online Berkeley account and found out that I got in. So I’d say you still have a solid chance at getting into UCB.

Berkeley and UCLA use a similar semi-holistic process now, but some students who apply to both get different holistic scores from the different schools’ readers.

In addition, division and major affect the threshold of holistic scores needed for admission. For example, someone intending to study CS may apply to Berkeley in either L&S or Engineering/EECS (generally regarded as having a higher threshold) and to UCLA in Engineering/CS or Engineering/CSE. Even if s/he gets the same holistic score from both schools’ readers, the selection of major may result in having to reach different thresholds.

Got rejected from sd and la as well, pretty bummed out about it, girlfriend kidnapped me and forced me to drown my sorrow in froyo, feeling better now, though i probably will relapse on ivy day.

Definitely going to appeal because I left out some significant details in my app and I’ll regret it for the rest of my life if I know I didn’t give it my best shot.

Know I probably won’t make Berkeley’s EECS since LA and SD flat out rejected me. Even my safety, UCSB, didn’t let me into engineering (still bitter about that one… ouch!)

If the UCs don’t want me, i’ll go to UIUC, do great things, and make cal/ucla/ucsd wish they had admitted me ;)

I got rejected from UCLA today, but somehow I got a regents interview for Berkeley (so im admitted to Cal).

Is it true that Cal is less number based than UCLA?

@Yomaxe. Yes, Cal is definitely more lenient when it comes to numbers (SAT/GPA)… Some of my friends got rejected UCLA due to their low GPA/SAT, but still got into Cal.

Don’t give up hope!

But isn’t Cal more prestigious and what not? I got into Cornell U and waitlisted at UCLA. Can someone enlighten me please?

fastsauce - don’t worry, I got rejected from UCLA with a 2320(I) and 730/730(II) for SAT and pretty crazy (good) ECs and essays. But I’m at Cal now, taking 2 majors and a minor in 2.5 years with a good GPA, honors thesis and several clubs + leadership.

Point is, you never know; don’t give up hope!

There is a discussion about http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/1306513-ucsc-using-holistic-scores-ucb-ucla-admit-decisions.html . While most applicants who applied to both (and UCSC) got the same score from both, some got different scores (with UCLA being more likely to produce the better score, although some applicants got better scores from Berkeley than from UCLA).

Hang in there and make sure you appeal. The chances are low but any chance is better than none.

Well, here is hoping. D was waitlisted by UCLA with a 2310, 4.33 UC GPA and lots of ECs. I went to Cal, so she also loves Cal. Fingers crossed for another Bear in this family after all.

Chrissy, son is in a similar situation to your D (though didn’t quite get that 2320 SAT - yowza). Problem with UCLA application and maybe with UCB is likely that they don’t superscore and best one sitting score was under 2200. But – like you – I’m an Old Blue, and one who’s been giving to Cal for 35 years and hoping that counts for something.

I am so sad now. I think I am not going to appeal UCLA because I don’t have any significant info to tell them. Everything about my life I said it there and I also got a supplemental request which I also put all my effort into it. The only award I got in my senior year is an art award from school which is considered nothing and all the reasons were stated in my app, so I think if I appeal, I will pretty much restate and expand what I had on my application and it’s not a big difference. (unless the reader is the different one, he might view my application from another perspective)

From my stats, I am definitely underqualified. I believe my personal statement was strong enough for me to get a borderline supplemental but still rejected.

Can you guys post if you applied to UCSC and if you were accepted or rejected over there? I have a theory on how to figure out whether or not we’ll get into Cal:

According to a UC Senate Committee meeting report, UCSC simply used UCB/UCLA’s holistic review scores and averaged them in order to determine their own individual holistic score which would then be used to determine whether or not the applicant got into UCSC. If we were rejected from UCLA, then we can assume that we had a relatively low score from UCLA. However, if we were accepted to UCSC, then we can also assume that we had a mid-to-high ranging average score. In other words, even if UCLA rejected us and we got into UCSC, then something must’ve balanced out the low score that we got from UCLA. The only balancing factor can be Cal’s score, which means that it should’ve been higher than what UCLA gave us. Think about it… its simple arithmetic:

(UCB + UCLA)/2 = UCSC

if UCLA = low, and UCSC = mid-to-high score, then UCB = mid-to-high score as well in order to balance out the low score that UCLA gave us.

Thoughts on this?
