Waitlisted......LOL

I don't mean to be arrogant or anything, but I think its pretty funny that Rice waitlisted me when i got a regents scholarship at berkeley and a johnson scholarship at washington and lee....did anyone else receive a strange or unexpected decision from rice?

Rice waitlists kids because it doesn’t have room for all qualified applicants. And because it wants a DIVERSE class in terms of areas of interest, geography, sex, culture, academic focus, extra curricular activities. It’s a crapshoot with all the qualified students. Congratulations on your other great acceptances.

My D got waitlisted at Rice also. I thought it was a safety school. She got into Vanderbilt and WUSTL so far. She has 35 ACT, good EC’s, NM Finalist, Presidential Scholar Finalist, etc. Also, what happens with National Merit if you dont’ get accepted until summer? Any idea?

I believe Rice gives you the NM scholarship if you are accepted - doesn’t matter when.

"My D got waitlisted at Rice also. I thought it was a safety school. "
Any top 25 school is not a safety by any means…admissions decisions are very random. I have no idea why people continue to believe that if they fulfill X Y and Z they are “in” at a university.

I also thought rice was a safety considering my application, i guess i was wrong.

However, I heard that they might waitlist an overqualified applicant or someone who has a great application, but does not express a lot of interest, and if they do accept a position on the waitlist, they probably will accept them.

I’m probably not accepting a position on the waitlist, so i guess that method works

I think Tufts also rejects / waitlists overqualified people as well…

as Handala92 pointed out in the Official Waitlisted Thread,

“I got into Stanford and was waitlisted at Rice…tufts syndrome much?”

ib612, I’m right with you. lol I am kind of disappointed that I didn’t get into Rice (waitlisted too) and it definitely doesn’t make me feel good for the Duke decisions tomorrow although I’ve already been accepted to WUSTL, Emory, Vandy, and UCLA. However, I AM guilty of not expressing a lot of interest…I didn’t even get my app in in time to get an interview. My friend whose brother was also waitlisted at Rice was also accepted to Stanford like Handala, so I guess that is reassuring. Just crossing my fingers for tomorrow!

yeah definitely, it just wasnt a very good sign before april 1st, but now i feel fine

Rice is not a safety school! Even if your stats are in the top quartile, even if you are a legacy, even if you are a one-legged unicycle champion. All the top schools, of which Rice is definitely one, get more qualified applicants than they can handle. This means that no matter how qualified you are, finding a seat for your behind may be more than they can do, because there are three other people just as qualified as you are for every seat.

A safety school is one that does NOT turn down qualified applicants, and where you are in the top quartile of applicants, assuming you don’t totally blow it in your essays.

A reach school is either a school where your strength is low compared to the rest of the applicant pool, or a school that is a crapshoot. If you have a 4.0 and 2400, Harvard, Rice, Stanford, Caltech, etc. are both match AND reach schools. Because even though you match, they don’t have room for everyone! In other words, if you have a 4.0 and 2400, you have NO match schools - only reaches and safeties.

This link at Rice (posted first by someone else) suggests that you do not get the NM scholarship if you come off the waitlist to be accepted:

At the link: Nice photo of Dr. Whitson who did not attend Rice as an undergrad. She got her PhD from Rice in 1986.

I got into Rice, and wait listed at Washington and Lee. I wouldn’t think too hard on it.

rice may be a “reach” school, but it is generally considered to be one of the easier top 20s to get into, thats all

Now you’re sounding like an arrogant tool. This thread is stupid overall.

Either you’re staying on the waitlist or you’re not. Your bitterness is toxic and unwanted.

In a way, the more you “degrade” and mock your Rice waitlist decision, the more I’m glad you got a serious ego check.

And by the way, Rice is FAR from being a safety school.

Guess you guys who thought so got a much-needed reality check? Seriously now.

Hey I got into Rice but was flat out rejected from Cal (instate) last year.

It’s worthless to compare admission decisions from similar schools.

AnOlderMom - I stand corrected… though I am still wondering if the “no merit scholarships” includes the NM $1000 a year one. But perhaps not! I’m sorry if I misguided anyone!

Speaking as a student who was accepted off the waitlist a few years back, I can attest that I did not receive the National Merit scholarship that I would have otherwise.

Just accepted to Duke today…definitely not taking a spot on the waitlist.

Wow…People are getting so defensive here. Honestly, I’d say definitely Tufts Syndrome. I was accepted while the two best applicants from my school were waitlisted. I love Rice too, but let’s be realistic.

I wouldn’t necessarily say Tufts Syndrome, but with Rice being a smaller school, it seems like they go for the people who they know really WANT to be there and are a good fit. Sometimes that isn’t always the person with the 4.0 and 2400.
