I thought I would know where I would be going to college by this time today, but I suppose I am not done waiting quite yet.

I'm not sure precisely what being waitlisted entails but I have heard it works something like this...

Let's say that UVA sends out 5000 acceptances and there are only 3000 spots available. However, only 2850 decide to matriculate, leaving 150 open spots. Then the top 150 people on the waitlist will be offered admission sometime in May/June.

Am I on the right track here?

Basically, I am looking for some dates and some stats...and a little candid advice to soothe the hearts and minds of those of us poor souls still stuck in admissions limbo.

Google "common data set UVA" (or university of Virginia if that doesn't work). The CDS should should applicants, number accepted, number offered waitlist spots, and the number who were accepted off the waitlist last year. I believe this is in set D, but I am not sure, either way it's not that long to look through. Just make sure you are looking at the first year students, because there's also transfer admission info on there.

C2. Freshman wait-listed students (students who met admission requirements but whose final admission was contingent on space availability)

Do you have a policy of placing students on a waiting list? YES

If yes, please answer the questions below for fall 2006 admissions:
Number of qualified applicants offered a place on waiting list 3,231
Number accepting a place on the waiting list 1,915
Number of wait-listed students admitted 145

Why should anyone consider going to a school based on the percentage of girls? You go to a school to get the best educational program. You're also assuming that Mike is straight which may not be the case.

Trust me as a mom of teen boys, as hard as you push them to consider a school for its "programs", not all of them are willing to NOT consider the female aspect of the school as well. Neither of my boys would even think of looking at anything but a co-ed school! Must be the hormones...heh, heh.

It's entirely reasonable to assume that any person is straight. I'm sure you know the numbers.

JMU and VT, from what I've seen, are roughly equal and take about the same quality of applicant. Why attend a school with lots of females? Uhhh. I've spent several weekends at JMU and VT...which do you think I prefer? JMU is fun in large part for its very healthy female population. :)

No, I don't know the numbers and speculated numbers are just assumptions. This is the problem of society and with people like you assuming that everyone is heterosexual, because guess what, the world doesn't revolve around heterosexuality.

On the 90+% chance that the OP is straight, he would enjoy JMU's large, attractive, party-going female population. No "problem" with that statement.

Oh well, I guess my friends were wrong (and I should have checked the facts before posting that figure). There's still a very noticeable imbalance at parties...

"hmmmm..may beg to differ on the world revolving around heterosex....with out it, zero population growth!!!"

mom, you're obviously not realizing that artificial insemination is becoming more popular these days, especially with older women. There is no need for sexual intercourse to make babies.

I am not gay.(how exactly did this thread get so utterly sidetracked?)

But anyways...I only applied to VT(accepted...I'll get into honors hopefully in a few weeks), William and Mary(waitlist), and UVA(waitlist).

I am planning on a major in Biochem so VT far exceeds JMU in terms of academics...which is my first priority.

I have one serious question though. I have kept my grades up for the 3rd quarter to the same standard as my first semester. If I let my A's slide to B's this last quarter will it have any impact on my chances of being admitted from the waitlist?

Oh how simple a flat-out denial would have made the last couple weeks of high school!

If you are serious about UVA, do not let your grades slide At ALL. I don't know how the thread got sidetracked like that either. Guess it's like conversations, they just drift from one thing to another sometimes.

mike, remember that not everyone who gets into UVA decides to go there. You still stand a chance to be accepted. Many, many kids apply to both W&M and UVA and decide not to attend either school. Keep your grades up and contact the schools and let them know that you're very interested and will attend if offered admission. In the meantime, congrats on getting into VT. (I know of someone who was rejected from JMU but got into UVA... With admissions, you just don't know...) Best of luck to you!
