Has there been any word on exactly how many students were offered a spot on the waitlist this year? I know the letter said around 150-250ish is average, but there's a pretty wide range in those two numbers. ;)

Actually, You pay for CMU and hold your place. Make your picks for dorms (New House, etc). IF you get into Caltech off waitlist, then you notify CMU. It is legal, tho you will lose the $500.00 deposit. They will follow up with a phone call or e-mail to see where you have decided to attend.

What seems to be happening is that some colleges (usually large state schools) are legally allowing kids to send in deposits, but offer a loophole for the person to change their mind (& lose deposits). Most of the better schools do not do this; they have limited enrollments, and people waiting for their place. For example, if you've been accepted to CMU's CS school, they have MANY people hoping for an opening.
Anyway, you can turn down a school if you get into another off the waitlist. Be considerate and let CMU know ASAP.

ok now that admissions have been sent out has the number of waitlisted applicants been release? Anyone know anything about numbers this year. Rumor on the street was that there were less people accepted because of a large class last year. Are they trying to have a small class this year or are they trying to just make sure they don't have another large class and hoping for the normal number of enrollments?

Target class size is not significantly different -- maybe a bit smaller because of the slight housing crunch. The goal is to just barely not have to use the waitlist, but Caltech was conservative in how many people to admit this year... so hoping that the waitlist gets used is not completely futile.

heh I'm hoping that too :P

We're going to have a fun 2 months, aren't we lizzard?

Ben will you be able to tell us how many people Tech is expecting to pull off the wait list come the beginning of may?

Not to speak for Ben, but I'm not sure how they know how many (if any) they will take off of the waitlist until they find out how many people are attending Caltech.

^^ I think that's why he said in the beginning of may.

I will ask the powerful ones, once the deadline passes and there is time to count the responses, and hopefully there will be some indication.

Oops, I interpreted that as asking for a prediction in about the future in the present... Not asking for a prediction about the present in the future. my bad.
