waitlisted over and over and over

i've been waitlisted by three schools - jhu, northwestern, and rice. i'm so confused, because my stats were pretty good and i know people who i think were definitely less qualified than me, and they got accepted to all three of these schools. i've applied to some of the ivy leagues, and i've completely lost hope now..is this possibly a case of tufts syndrome or did i just totally overestimate myself and blow my chances at college?

what are your stats?

Same situation! Waitlisted at Emory, Vandy and GA Tech.

I hate to be pessimistic, but there is pretty much 0 hope for Ivies at this point.

my stats…

SAT was high 2200s, SAT IIs were kinda low…one 770, one 730, one 710

weighted GPA was a 4.63, unweighted was like a 3.9 or something

i’ll be graduating with nine APs…of the one’s i have already taken, i have three 5s and one 4

ECs were solid…president of one club, lots of community service, flute since i was in elementary, MUN, varsity soccer…

recs were amaaazing…one from an apush teacher who said i was one of the best students she had ever taught, another from a lang teacher who said my writing was wonderful…my counselor and i are on very good terms, she said that her recommendation was the best she has ever written in over ten years of counseling…

essays were good, the commonapp i thought was very unique, it combined different experiences in my life that all add up to define me as a person…the supplemental stuff for rice was okay, nothing special…

roberto…yeah, i know, it’s such a depressing feeling…i’ve pretty much just accepted that i’m going to have to go to one of my safety schools :(

Well I’m at 2 accept, 2 reject, and 4 WL so far…

i’ve gotten waitlisted at two of my top choices so far as well. schools - especially expensive private ones - seem to be using waitlists a lot more this year because they know they’ll have a solid handful of admitted students who simply can’t afford to come. multiple sources have been saying that we should expect more “waitlist action” this year than ever before.

haha ive gotten waitlitsetd at bucknell, colgate, emory, notre dame, and vandy so far.
its a good thing i applied to 12 schools after 2 rejections (duke and unc)

yeah, i’ve heard that too…it’s just that it seems really tough for us to be hanging by a string all the way until july or august…and i’m sure there are factors other than finances that play into their decisions…i just wish i knew what they are! lol

Well I got waitlisted at JHU and Duke, but got into Rice. I think for Rice, your essays might have hurt you–my Rice essays were sooo good, I don’t even know why I spent so much time on Rice anyway. It’s not even in my top 5 choices. It sucks to get these waitlists, I know. I’m personally anticipating 7 rejections/waitlists tomorrow/Wednesday. Good luck to you.

I feel you. I’ve been waitlisted at 3 schools (including JHU, like yourself) and two of the schools i’m just like w.t.f. why?
It makes me worry about tomorrow although I only applied to one ivy. I guess all there is to do now is just wait and see. Also, stay on the waiting list of the school you really want to attend, you never know what might happen! GL!

I feel your pain. I was waitlisted at Holy Cross, Barnard, and Bates.

I wasn’t too upset over HC. The Barnard waitlist sucked, but at least I can blame it on the fact that I applied late and did not interview. Being waitlisting at Bates sucked the most. That’s the only waitlist I will accept a spot on.

Its the economy to blame. Nobody is certain if yield rates will follow historical trends, so they need a bigger safety net. I’ve been wait listed by Gtown, Duke, Washu. Just the ivies left to open.

accept a spot and follow up on all your waitlist, you have a great chance with great scores…

i have a question…if we accept a waitlist position, and somehow magically get accepted off it…is it binding? or do we have a choice

you have a choice if accepted

How does financial aid work if you make it off a wait list? Is it true that you are likely to get less financial aid if you are coming off a wait list?

Same situation, wait listed by four colleges  but I think this year they’ll be drawing from them more because of the uncertainty surrounding the economy. There hasn’t been a precedent for acceptances and matriculation under these circumstances, so it seems admins are being very careful.

before the 3 schools, were you accepted or rejected by any other schools? I’m curious cuz mine has a pattern, first 3 in-state schools = accepted. Then starting 3/14 first school to reject me, mit followed by rice then nu. and today I have 2 waitlisted, so if I get another waitlist letter tomorrow then I’m gonna go out and buy me a lottery ticket.

chinablue - i’m pretty sure that if you make it off the waitlist, you don’t get any financial aid, or very little, at least at my schools. i’m sure that this was the policy at either rice or hopkins, i can’t remember which…

sleepycat - i was accepted to two state schools and georgetown EA…I actually had pretty high hopes after the EA acceptance, but those just came crashing down within the past week haha

also, for those interested, i spoke to someone in admissions at rice, and she also said that they were more likely to draw upon the waitlist due to the financial uncertainties, but i also found out that some of these schools don’t tell us the full truth. many of them say that their waiting lists are not ranked, but i was very suspicious of this, because a friend of mine was place on a priority waitlist. so i asked the rice admissions lady about it, and she became extremely flustered. it took her a while to organize her thoughts, and even then she was very vague. “well, we have a priority waitlist, and we don’t have a priority waitlist. if we need a particular applicant for a particular major, we will look at everyone again, but if we don’t, we will take them of the so-called priority waitlist.” it was complete and total BS. :</p>

You’re not alone, 7 waitlists here so far.
