I am not posting this for any other reason than to inform others on the wait list that Duke has apparently begun taking people off of the list. My S got a cell phone message today (April 29) and when he called back, he found out he has been admitted! We were very surprised because we didn't expect anything to happen with this until at least a few days after 5/1.

So if Duke is your dream school and you are waiting, you may want to hold off on pushing the button on your back-up school until the last minute to avoid incurring a lot of unnecessary expenses like enrollment fees, deposits on dorms, etc. at the backup college. I wish we had.

I’m sure the economy is leading many people to choose scholarships (or just much cheaper tuition in general) at State U over paying the full price tag at elite private schools. I would not be surprised to see yield go down this year.

economy is bad>kids choose lower cost in-state schools over private elites like Duke> waitlisted kids get admitted and rush to send in their money> yield goes down for Duke, kids end up paying more than $120K over 4 years for a private college, Duke’s ranking goes down, while UVa, U of Mich, UC Berkley all go up later> why pay the extra$???

^^Gee, 174IQ, I can hardly even believe you posted this after all the abuse you took previously in your “how could they possibly wait list ME?!!” post from a few weeks ago. Definitely one of the funniest threads I’ve seen.

I think every Duke enrollee (whether already admitted or from the wait list to come) couldn’t be happier you are choosing another school. Hey, what the heck though, good luck!!

Well, Duke learned its lesson a few years ago when they admitted too many people and over enrolled the freshman engineering class (I believe they still admitted a few off the waitlist for Trinity though). This was the first year they expanded Pratt by 50 students/class, and yield was higher than expected, so the total freshman class was about 75-100 students larger than they anticipated. They had to convert a lot of the doubles in freshman dorms to triples. Duke wants to avoid this again. It’s a lot easier to play it safe and just take people off the waitlist then to take a gamble and over enroll the freshman class causing space and number issues.

General Comments: Ecstatic! Duke was my first choice until i got waitlisted so now i’m definitely going to visit, but I’m choosing between amherst and duke for now.

Thanks supachai, I just wanna get a feel for who has what and gets waitlisted then accepted (and that was a terrible sentence). Your stats looking pretty strong too. I’m guessing you applied RD not ED>deferred>waitlisted

i sent in that i want to remain on the lsit today…duke is not by number one school soo u can tell me if my chances are gone by making this decision

Problem is that the most select colleges make you sign agreement that you will not send in a deposit to any other school. so it might be too late to get some ‘top students’ off the waitlist.

@lagunal,
All colleges explicitly state the exception of acceptance from the waitlist. Even if you’ve sent in your response/deposit to College 1, if you get off College 2’s waiting list, then you’re ALWAYS allowed to go to College 2.
